6 domestic movies to revisit after 40

Some works we perceive in one way at a young age, and after a few decades we perceive them in a completely different way. They are like a good wine, they only reveal themselves with age. Together with a film critic and art historian, we have collected for you six films that are worth revisiting after 40 years.

“A Few Days in the Life of I.I. Oblomov”

1979, directed by Nikita Mikhalkov.

This movie is good as a chance to avoid a midlife crisis. In 20 years it is easier for a person to define his goals and dreams, but after 30 he is more and more often asked the question: why am I doing this?

In Nikita Mikhalkov’s picture there is a wonderful monologue of Oblomov himself that running around leads to nothing. A person must have a sense of his actions in life, interest in what he does.

“The Island”

2006, directed by Pavel Lungin

This picture is worthy of revision in different periods of life in order to check what is more in life: external attributes or internal content. The value of life is in simplicity, not in new galoshes, in human relations, not in career.

Another important point is the idea of God as the inner support of man. Pavel Lungin tried to convey to the viewer the idea that in any place and at any time the inner support of man always remains with him and he can rely on it.

“The Game of Truth”

2013, directed by Viktor Shamirov

One of the few pictures that reveals the characters of the heroes when the action takes place in the same room. The movie is about the importance of honesty to oneself. The characters gradually share their secrets, which makes the viewer put himself in their place and think how he would act in this case? After all, each person probably has his own secret, which changes him and his relationship with others.

Some people consciously stop being honest with themselves, so as not to reveal themselves, while others cannot reveal themselves, but wish to do so. Thus, both the former and the latter become what they do not want to be.

To read about the heroes from whom it is worth taking an example, you can read in our material.

“Cage for Canaries”

1983, directed by Pavel Chukhrai

Many young people feel that they are locked in a cage. They want to breathe freely. They want to realize that they are loved. Often they are resentful of their loved ones, that they are not attentive enough to them. In fact, it turns out that there are many more circumstances and facts in life that they do not know about.

The movie helps to think about what motives a person has and why someone feels that no one understands him. Maybe actions have a reason? The picture teaches viewers empathy and acceptance of the point of view of others.

“The Courier”

1986, directed by Karen Shakhnazarov.

For the younger generation, Karen Shakhnazarov’s picture “Courier” often becomes iconic, and for good reason. Throughout the movie, the hero is looking for an answer to the questions of his generation and its opposition to the elders.

The authors of the picture argue over freedom of speech and duties to society and parents, which can not be erased. As a result, the director pushes the viewer to the idea that there are no new and old generations in themselves, there are only people’s ideas about it. And then there are the eternal problems of choosing how to continue living, which are a little bit different in each new generation.

After 40 you want to ask the hero new questions and analyze how you would act now. In addition, the movie teaches us to understand the younger generation.

“A Lesson in Literature”

1968, directed by Alexei Korenev

A very topical theme – the need to work at a job you don’t like. To it are often added circumstances that do not allow this unloved work to quit or change it. What decision did the hero make? He decided to become honest to himself and tell only the truth to everyone for at least one day.

The viewer will see how the hero’s life situation changes not in his favor, and will notice the mistakes he made. The movie is about the fact that the formation of personal happiness taking into account the interests of other people requires great art.
