6 non-obvious foods you should limit on your menu

Almost everyone knows about the harm of fast food, fatty and sweet food, caloric content of alcohol. However, in addition to them, there are others in the diet. Their negative impact on the body is not so obvious, so many people do not even think about it. Together with scientists and nutriciologist Anna Berseneva, we understand what products should be reduced and what can be substituted for some of them.

Cheese and yogurt

In general, dairy products often cause food allergies or lactose intolerance. This, in turn, can retain fluid in the body, interfere with the gastrointestinal tract, and contribute to excess weight.

Several scientists from the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the University of Delaware and Johns Hopkins Medical Institutes conducted a study to determine the relationship between dairy consumption and the development of obesity and metabolic syndrome. The authors of the paper pay special attention to cheese and yogurt – they increase the risk of central obesity.

What to replace with:

A plant-based alternative to cheese is tofu. But, warns the nutriciologist, we must be careful, because they contain phytoestrogens in large quantities, which actively affect the hormonal system. Men are not recommended to eat tofu and soy products more than twice a week, as well as women with certain hormonal pathologies.

Yogurts can be replaced with vegetable or plant milk: coconut milk, oat milk, almond milk, buckwheat milk.

Peppers, eggplants, tomatoes

These vegetables belong to the nightshade family, which contain solanine – a poisonous organic compound. In people who are sensitive to this substance, consumption of these vegetables can aggravate the general condition of the body and exacerbate disease syndromes. In general, however, solanine increases the risk of inflammatory processes and should not be abused.

What to replace with:

Celery – root and stem, yams and even regular baked potatoes will serve as a substitute for nightshades. And if you really want eggplant or tomatoes, you should remove the skin and remove the seeds – the pulp contains much less dangerous substances, notes nutriciologist.

Wheat, rye, barley

These foods are high in gluten and yeast. Even if your body digests gluten normally, but there are problems with the intestinal mucosa, it can exacerbate problems and disrupt digestion.

As for yeast, several studies suggest that yeast fungus and certain gut bacteria may increase the risk of not only inflammatory bowel disease, but also obesity.

What to replace with:

A great alternative would be buckwheat, millet, rice – preferably uncooked, as white rice has a lot of negative effects on the gastrointestinal tract. Quinoa and amaranth are also suitable.

Exotic and sweet fruits

Exotic mangoes, kiwi, bananas and fruits with a high glycemic index (such as grapes, peaches) contain high amounts of fructose. Its excess increases the load on the liver, because of which the body breaks down and digests fats worse. Systematic overeating of sweet fruits can lead to a violation of lipid metabolism and excess weight.

What to replace with:

Exotic fruits can perfectly well be replaced with fruits with an optimal glycemic index. “And, what I advise you to pay special attention to – berries. They can well be bought frozen, there is even more vitamin C: currants, sea buckthorn, cranberries, cranberries, strawberries, strawberries,” – recommends the expert.

Meat and poultry

Both red and white meat contain omega-6 fatty acids. According to recent studies, the increased content of this substance in the body, namely in red blood cells (erythrocytes), increases the risk of obesity. Therefore, the consumption of meat dishes should also be limited.

What to replace with:

If you want to exclude sources of animal protein, you should be very careful. Because in this case, it is then necessary to create a complete chain of amino acids during the day, that is, to use several sources of protein of plant origin. For example, lentils and buckwheat. In order for amino acids to be digested, they must create a certain molecule. Therefore, you should use grains, legumes, nuts, seeds and mix it all up. According to a nutritionist, it takes at least two sources of plant protein to replace one source of animal protein.

Eggs

Eggs, especially the yolks, contain quite a bit of cholesterol. Researchers at Northwestern University in the United States have found that those who eat a lot of eggs have a significantly higher risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death.
