“Just calm down”: what is anxiety and how to deal with it?

Last year’s pandemic and a long period of self-isolation also affected people’s mental state. In 2020, for example, 89% more people consulted psychologists compared to 2019. Due to constant stress, many people face an obsessive sense of anxiety and worry. It can be difficult to get rid of it and calm down. Psychologist Nadezhda Pozharova tells how to distinguish anxiety from anxiety, when it’s time to consult a specialist and how you can overcome this feeling.

How does anxiety differ from anxiety?

Anxiety is a stable trait of a person, which over time becomes part of it. As a rule, there is some reason why it was necessary to form such a quality. The psyche and body tend to help a person. And if he or she is constantly under stress, if he or she has a difficult family environment, bullying at school, heavy socialization, problems with friends, etc., then a quality like anxiety develops.

When we talk about anxiety, it is an emotional state that arises under certain circumstances. It can occur in both anxious and non-anxious people. Anxiety is a signal of some kind of threat to a person, in such a situation he is primarily concerned about his safety. And it is important to work with this feeling.

Anxiety – unlike fear – is most often of an indeterminate nature. Thus, a person has a number of beliefs on which his perception of the world and himself is based. And discrepancies between reality and these beliefs can cause an unpleasant feeling of insecurity. For example, someone is convinced that it is necessary to constantly work, grow and develop. And if he stops for a while, pauses and rests, it will seem to him that his competitors are one step ahead. Then a person has a constant feeling that he is insufficient in everything, everything around is not enough, and if he now relaxes, something bad is bound to happen.

Many people confuse anxiety and anxiety and mistakenly try to fight the first, instead of working with the second.

How to overcome feelings of anxiety?

Work with limiting beliefs
The first place to start is working with limiting beliefs. You need to realize what is causing this to happen. It can happen that a person has a stable job, everything is harmonious in the family, but he still every now and then faces anxiety. It is necessary to understand the reasons.

Focus on your own body
Then it is very good to use fine motor skills and return the focus of attention to your body. These are body practices, grounding techniques, conscious breathing.

Hope: At the moment of anxiety, you should not go into a smartphone or TV, but on the contrary, stay “in life”: look out the window, watch the birds fly, breathe the air, watch something else. It’s important not to escape into another reality – it won’t make you less anxious, you’ll only be doing yourself a disservice.

Recognize other feelings
Often when anxious, people try to dull those feelings. They start eating a lot, fussing. At this point, it is important to recognize what other accompanying feelings you are experiencing. For example, feelings of fear (in case of rejection or abandonment), feelings of inferiority, lack of autonomy, violation of boundaries. Here it is important to note what exactly caused the anxiety.

How to understand that it is worth to consult a specialist?

If anxiety attacks are so strong that it interferes with life, it’s time to seek help from a psychologist.

Alarm bells include:

  • sleep disturbances;
  • psychosomatic reactions: constant muscle tension, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome;
  • poor concentration;
  • constant irritability.

Do not be patient and wait for everything to go away – anxiety can develop into more serious diseases.
