Marathon, sprint and trail: how types of running differ

For beginners, running is a light workout in parks to keep fit. For amateurs and pros, it is quite different. There are a huge number of variants of running, differing in specifics, distances and terrain.

Let’s understand the nuances.

In order not to draw complex tables and not to create interactive presentations, let’s determine that you can exercise:

  • in the stadium;
  • outside the stadium;
  • in a hall.

Now that we have a kind of “skeleton” of knowledge, let’s add details.

Stadium

All sports facilities in the city allow training for different types of running and distances.

Sprint – 60-400 meters. This type is often used as one of the norms for training athletes.

Running with barriers – the athlete needs to overcome barriers that are placed along the entire distance. In summer, races are held at 110 meters – for men, at 100 meters – for women. In winter, competitions are held at 50-60 meters in indoor arenas.

Hour Run – runners try to cover the maximum distance possible for them in an hour.

Steeplechase – not to be confused with hurdles. The competition is unpredictable and there is no immediate winner. Athletes run 3000 meters in an outdoor stadium and 2000 meters in an indoor arena. On the distance it is necessary to overcome various obstacles, heavy structures and most importantly – a massive barrier with a pit filled with water.

In the stadium you can run medium (800-3000 meters) and long distances (from 3000 meters). The 5,000-meter, 10,000-meter and, of course, the 42,195-meter marathon are considered Olympic classics.

Long and middle distances can be run by everyone. Beginners – for endurance training and weight loss, and professionals – for general fitness.

All distances of competitions held in the stadium are measured in meters, races “outside the walls” are measured in kilometers.

Outside the stadium

  • Highway disciplines (half marathon, marathon and super marathon).
  • Trailrunning.

إنmarathon is 42 kilometers and 195 meters. Yes, yes, the Olympic race can be held not only in the stadium, but also on the highway.

Half Marathon – as you have understood, here the marathon distance is divided into two and is 21 kilometers and 97.5 meters. The races are held on the highway or in the city limits.

إنsuper marathon is a distance of 100 kilometers. It is held in the format of a regular race.

Trailrunning – simply put, cross-country running. Runners need to overcome hills, mountain passes, rivers, sandy areas and more. And if the elevation change on the route exceeds 1000 meters trail turns into skyrunning.

Running in the gym

This type of running is familiar to everyone who goes to the gym. Some people do not feel comfortable running outside, so they come to run in a fitness club. Here you can run any distance that you like.

The only disadvantage is static. Those who like to twist their heads around while jogging will find it boring to run in the gym.
