Why, how much and why you need to sleep, and why it is impossible to sleep away.

Approximately one-third of the human body’s entire life is in a sleepy state. However, an average of 10% to 30% of the population still suffers from sleep deprivation. We had plenty of time to get a good night’s sleep over the long holidays. And it seems that we are now definitely ready for the work week. But is it possible to sleep well, and how to do it? Let’s try to figure it out.

Why sleep at all?

If you think that sleep is just a time of rest, you are deeply mistaken. When we fall asleep, the body reduces the speed of work of all organs. It is a complex process of muscle tension and relaxation, heart rate increases and decreases, blood pressure rises and falls. Ignoring this natural need can lead to unpleasant consequences. For example, if in the middle of the day you began to lurch into sleep, but fall asleep at least for a few minutes you can not, performance will be significantly reduced. If you skip hours of rest for a long time, the body will be seriously stressed, which will affect your health.

How much sleep do I need?

The need for sleep is not the same and depends not only on how tired you are, but also on your age. The National Sleep Foundation gives the following recommendations:

* 0 to 3 months – 14 to 17 hours;
* 4 to 11 months – 12 to 15 hours;
* 1 to 2 years of age – 11 to 14 hours;
* 3 to 5 years of age – 10 to 13 hours;
* from 6 to 15 years – 9-11 hours;
* from 14 to 17 years – 8-10 hours;
* 18 to 64 years old – 7-9 hours;
* 65 years and over – 7-8 hours.

Can I get enough sleep?

Surprisingly, yes. It is possible to get enough sleep before a hard work week. And modern researchers confirm it. Doctor-somnologist Mikhail Poluektov says: “During the week, people artificially increased sleep time by two hours, and the next week they more easily than those who did not increase, tolerated various sleep restrictions. That is, it has been proven that, at least in a week’s time, it is possible to get enough sleep. And that’s exactly what we do every week.” However, it should be understood that long-term ignoring sleep can lead to a temporary decrease in performance and increased irritability, as well as to serious health consequences.

That is, in the short term, it is possible to get enough sleep, but your body should not be overworked by an extraordinary amount of stress. One thing is certain, quality sleep before an important event reduces the likelihood that you will fall asleep on it.

It is allowed to sleep as much as your body requires
