There is bad news for Petersburgers and guests of the city. None of the water bodies of the city’s beaches has been recognized as suitable for swimming. Such disappointing results were announced by Rospotrebnadzor, which took more than a hundred water samples. Alas, even the famous city beaches of the Gulf of Finland did not pass the test.
However, do not be in a hurry to be sad – you can sunbathe on the beaches, but it is forbidden to go into the water. And if swimming is forbidden in St. Petersburg itself, then eight places in the Leningrad region were included in the green list of Rospotrebnadzor.
Let’s find out where you can only sunbathe, and where you can take a dip and refresh yourself.
Sunbathing only: top 7 beaches in St. Petersburg
Beach near the Peter and Paul Fortress
Address: 3 Peter and Paul Fortress.
Entrance: free of charge.
Sun loungers for rent: not available.
The famous beach on Hare Island is considered to be the most popular city beach. Swimming is not allowed here, but there are always a lot of vacationers. However, this year the beach and all passages to it are closed – since spring of last year restoration of the facade of the Peter and Paul Fortress is going on. The works are planned to be completed in December 2024.
The beach itself is covered with clean sand and is located right under the wall of the fortress – the very wall along which sunbathers stand. The wall appeared for a reason, it protects the fortress from powerful northern winds. But Petersburgers have taken a liking to it as, so to speak, a device for vertical tanning.
“Green Beach” in Kirov Central Park on Yelagin Island
Address: Primorsky district, Yelagin Island, 4.
Entrance: weekdays – free of charge, weekends – 100 rubles.
Sun loungers for rent: not available.
The beach is located on the bank of the Srednya Nevka. Green beach was named because of the grassy surface. There is everything for the convenience of vacationers – changing cabins, showers, toilets. For fans of active rest there is a beach volleyball court.
Kronstadt city beach

And although it is forbidden to swim in this area, you can simply indulge in sunbathing. In the 2010s, the beach was completely reconstructed, and now there are all conditions for a comfortable vacation: sun umbrellas, showers, toilets, changing rooms, cafes. There is a rental of boats and catamarans. For children there is a playground, and not far away is the Kronstadsky Yacht Club.
Beach “Sea Oaks”
Address: Primorsky district, Lisiy Nos settlement, Dubki territory.
Entrance: free of charge.
Sun loungers for rent: not available.
Beautiful area and equipped beach attract a lot of people. Therefore, be prepared that on weekends you will have to squeeze here. The crowdedness is explained by the fact that in walking distance to the beach there is a nature reserve “North Coast of Nevskaya Guba”. And this is an ideal place for beautiful photos. On the territory of the beach there are several deck chairs (they are unpaid, so they are quickly occupied), benches for rest after a walk through the picturesque area, toilets, changing cabins, sports grounds and a barbecue area.
Ozerki” beach
Address: Vyborgskoe sh., 14.
Entrance: free of charge.
Sun loungers for rent: not available.
The beach is located on the Upper Suzdal Lake and is one of the places visited by Petersburgers in summer. It’s a pity, but it also did not pass the inspection of Rospotrebnadzor, so vacationers are left to enjoy the sun. However, nothing prevents you from lying on the clean sand. By the way, there are no catering outlets here, so you should buy provisions and drinks in advance. Sunbeds and umbrellas are also not provided – if you do not want to burn under the rays of the active sun, take awnings with you.
Dubkovsky beach
Address: Kurortny district, Sestroretsk.
Entrance: free of charge.
Sun loungers for rent: not available.
The beach in Kurortny district, surrounded by forests, is located in Sestroretsk on the shores of the Gulf of Finland near the park “Dubki”. The air is incredibly clean and fresh, which, unfortunately, can not be said about the water. This year swimming in the reservoir, according to Rospotrebnadzor, will have to forget.
The sand and pebble beach is large, its length is almost 1 km. Pampered individuals better take rubber flip-flops, as in some places the pebbles are quite large. Another disadvantage is mosquitoes, the number of which increases in the evening. Special means will save you from bloodsucking insects. There are umbrellas from the sun, but there are no sun beds – you can take compact folding deck chairs. You can satisfy your hunger in the cafe, where hot food is served, and you can eat ice cream in the kiosk. By the way, there is a grocery store on the territory. Active kids will like the children’s playground with trampolines, adults can throw a ball on the volleyball court. There is also a boat station with the rental of catamarans and boats.

Stunningly picturesque place next to the Koltushskaya Upland, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. There are several beaches in the vicinity of the pine forest. The water in Korkinsky Lake warms up quite quickly, this is due to the fact that it is not very deep – up to 4 meters.
The territory of the beach is maximally ennobled. In addition to the standard set – changing rooms, toilets, umbrellas – there is a fish restaurant, volleyball and tennis courts, a zone with children’s slides and swings, boat and fishing gear rentals, tents and barbecues. Practically everything to have a great time!
Shingarka River
Address: Lomonosov district, Nizino village, 50 km from St. Petersburg.
Entrance: free of charge.
Rental of deck chairs: not available.
The Shingarka River is famous for its underground springs with spring water. It turns out that the Shingarka feeds the fountains of Peterhof! The water in the river is always clean, so it is not surprising that it has once again passed the Rospotrebnadzor inspection.
Lake Omchino
Address: Luga district, Leningrad region, 150 km from St. Petersburg.
Entrance: free of charge.
Rental of deck chairs: not available.
The water in the lake is quite cool – all because of beating from under the ground keys. But on a hot day this, on the contrary, will be a plus. On the territory of the coast you can organize picnics, there are gazebos with barbecues. Also in walking distance is a large number of bases for family vacations, where you can stay for a long time.
Tikhvinka River
Address: Tikhvin, 1st Tikhvin microdistrict, 216 km from St. Petersburg.

Tosnensky quarry
Address: Shapki settlement, 77 km from St. Petersburg.
Entrance: free of charge.
Sun loungers for rent: not available.
At the beginning of the last century in the village of Shapki there was sand mining, so several quarries were formed. Tosnensky quarry is recognized suitable for swimming. In addition to the purest blue water (this shade is given by the blue clay at the bottom of the quarry), there is soft sand, a forest with centuries-old pine trees, a cafe and barbecue areas.
Nesterovskoe Lake
Address: Shapki settlement, 77 km from St. Petersburg.
Entrance: free of charge.
Rental of deck chairs: not available.
Another ecologically clean place is also located in the village of Shapki – Nesterovskoe Lake is also located in the Tosnensky district. However, this beach is called a wild beach by the locals, since there are no changing cabins, catering points and sports equipment rentals, which are usual for city beaches. But all the apparent disadvantages are compensated by clean warm water and pine forest where you can pick mushrooms and berries.
