A drop in the sea: how sports brands are fighting for the environment

Environmental trends in fashion are becoming more and more sustainable every year. The mass market releases capsule collections, and models wearing dresses made of garbage bags or soda lids appear on the catwalks. But who says that sports outfits can’t be eco-friendly? We tell you about the most eco-friendly brands and their projects.

Nike and innovative developments

The famous sports brand has long been not hiding its contribution to environmental protection, encouraging everyone to support innovative technologies.

Two of Nike’s most eco-friendly designs are Flyknit materials and Nike Grind. Every millimeter of these materials is precision-tuned down to the last stitch. This has not only significantly reduced the amount of waste entering the environment, but also created the lightest, most durable and most comfortable shoes in the history of the brand. Thanks to the idea of Nike Grind, the company releases new versions of old models, constantly improving the materials used and increasing their functionality.

In addition, the packaging for the product you purchase will be made from recycled materials. And old collections will be recycled into sports equipment.

Adidas and the world ocean

A few years ago, the world-famous company released shoes that helped prevent pollution of the Earth’s water surface. A pair of sneakers is made from plastic waste found in the ocean.

To begin with, the manufacturers decided to use coastal garbage and fishing nets lifted from the bottom as a material. One of the collections is made just from such poachers’ nets, in which hundreds of sea inhabitants died. But the most original idea is the memory technology, which will allow the shoes to retain their marine flavor.

Representatives of adidas revealed that sales of ocean plastic shoes reached the million mark in 2017, and this year they are set to achieve an even grander number of sales.

Run for the oceans

Another eco-friendly project from adidas is Run for the oceans. In June 2018, nearly 1 million people ran more than a cumulative 12 million kilometers in defense of the world’s oceans and raised a million dollars for Parley Ocean School’s youth education initiatives. Last year’s project is over, but it’s more than a movement. And it’s never too late to be a part of it. You can get creative, rally people around you, and launch your own fundraiser to support the movement.

Get involved.

Although the model has been discontinued, you still have a chance to find a few options online.

Reebok and corn

Last year, Reebok caught up with the competition and also offered customers their first eco-shoe model. The NPC UK Cotton + Corn sneakers have a sole made from recycled corn. The upper is made from 100 percent cotton and the insole is made from castor soybean oil.

The makers claim that customers won’t notice any difference between a regular and eco pair of the brand’s sneakers.

Small steps

Want to do your part for the environment too, but don’t know how? Easy. You can do it every time you go grocery shopping. Most shoppers have long been in the habit of weighing each type of fruit in a separate bag. If you think about it, the actual use of a bag is only 12 minutes, but tons of plastic in landfills does not finally decompose (one small bag “lives” longer than a person – up to 100 years, and then turns into immortal microplastic).

Since December 14, Zero Waste Shop in LavkaLavka and OrganicMarket chain stores have launched the #Fruzhba (fruit friendship) campaign and show customers how to make friends with fruits. The recipe is simple: first weigh tangerines by putting them on the scale without cellophane, then bananas and, for example, pineapple. We put the fruit in one bag, stick price tags on it and go to the checkout. Do not worry about the slanted glances of store employees. On the contrary, when serving such customers, they smile more often and often share the idea of fighting for the preservation of ecology and the environment.

Put fruit in one bag and support the action with photos on social networks using the hashtags #Frujba #MyFriendshipPack #FriendFruit. You know it’s a small step for an individual, but a huge one for all of humanity.
