In the lens: Commander Islands. On the edge of the Earth
Author’s project of photographer Kirill Umrikhin: extreme sports, local features and untouched nature.
People have long loved to travel and find the most distant lands. The Commander Islands are one of the most distant territories of our country from the capital. About 7 thousand kilometers separate the capital and the village of Nikolskoye in the Aleutian district of Kamchatka Krai – the only settlement of Komandor.
In 2018, photographer Kirill Umrikhin won an international grant to organize an expedition to this harsh and amazing place.
Kirill reached Kamchatka and further on by yacht to the open ocean in search of islands with incredible nature and history. But the team had another goal – to find waves and wind suitable for surfing or kite surfing.
Kirill Umrikhin: “It was a challenging and dangerous adventure. Just one of those adventures where you can’t fully think and organize everything, and the main goal is to get back to land alive. You and your boat are completely at the mercy of nature in one of the most dangerous and difficult to navigate regions in the world, with 400 km of open ocean ahead and depths of over 5000 meters, but these places are so unique and interesting that it was impossible to turn back”.
Where to see it? Until April 3, anyone can see the exhibition of Kirill Umrikhin’s works “Commander Islands. On the edge of the Earth.” The works are placed in the art park “Museon”.
