It’s not all bad: sports in which Russia can be called a leader

Sport has always been very important for our country. History knows hundreds of great Russian athletes, whose records no one can beat to this day. And although in 2020 many championships were canceled, this did not prevent our country from consolidating leadership positions. In this article, “Championship” will tell you about the sports where Russia has confidently dominated in recent years.

Ski racing

To begin the story about Russia’s success in sports, it is worth starting, of course, with ski racing, as the second consecutive victory at the Tour de Ski, brought by Alexander Bolshunov, is now the most discussed event. Earlier, at the end of 2016, Russia’s victory in this race was brought by Sergey Ustyugov.

Interestingly, although the USSR ceased to exist almost 30 years ago, the USSR team is still in 3rd place in the overall medal standings of the Olympic Games in cross-country skiing (68 medals), overtaking Finland (80 medals).

Figure skating

Russian figure skating is rightfully considered the best in the world. From 2014 to 2020, all gold medals at the European Figure Skating Championships belonged to Russia. In fact, before that, Russia dominated for 10 years from 1996 thanks to Irina Slutskaya and Maria Butyrskaya. Our country has also captured all the silver medals since 2013.

Russia won 5 medals at the 2019 World Championships and 2 medals each in 2018, 2017 and 2016.

Mixed martial arts

Where can you go without Khabib? Yes, this particular fighter has been keeping all his opponents in awe for several years now.
At the end of October, Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje faced off in the main event of UFC254. There’s no need to guess who won.

And although, as Khabib stated, his career in the sport is over, nevertheless, thanks to Khabib Nurmagomedov, Russia is confidently holding on to the top of the sport.

But Khabib is not the only worthy fighter from Russia in the UFC (which many people forget): Alexey Oleinik (74 fights, 59 wins), Zabit Magomedsharipov (19 fights, 18 wins), Alexander Volkov (39 fights, 31 wins), Peter Yan (16 fights, 15 wins) and many others.

Rhythmic gymnastics

Even Emperor Peter the Great sought to popularize this sport in Russia as a compulsory subject of military education. But after the 1917 revolution, Soviet gymnastics abandoned Western models and followed a new path. And it worked: the debut of Soviet gymnasts at the Olympic Games in 1952 was triumphant, the team won nine gold medals and climbed the podium 22 times.

Currently, the leaders of the world rhythmic gymnastics are Dina Averina (three-time absolute world champion) and Arina Averina (four-time world champion, absolute European champion), Alexandra Soldatova (four-time world champion, three-time European champion, Russian champion) and Ekaterina Seleznyova (two-time world champion).

There are many other sports where Russia is good, but it cannot be called the best. Such sports include ice hockey (after all, the Russian national team does not always manage to reach gold medals), basketball, beach soccer. All thanks to the athletes who work hard to bring glory and honor to their country. For this we thank them very much! And we can only hope that the coronavirus will finally recede in 2021 and we will be able to win new medals at the World Championships and Olympic Games.
