Why Diego Maradona sued Dolce & Gabbana.

The legendary Argentinean sued the famous fashion house for 70 thousand euros.

Collaborations between fashion brands and famous athletes have long been part of big business. The use of a famous name in the creation of clothes, shoes or cosmetics can increase the company’s profits by several dozen times. However, if you decide to take advantage of the popularity of athletes without their permission, you will have to spend the next couple of years in litigation. Such a situation arose between the fashion house Dolce & Gabbana and former soccer player Diego Maradona.

Why did Maradona sue Dolce & Gabbana?

Diego Maradona sued Dolce & Gabbana for using his name at a fashion show in Naples in 2016. One of the models appeared on the runway wearing a shirt in Napoli colors with the number 10 and Maradona’s last name. The garment was decorated with many crystals. According to the soccer player’s lawyer, Ulysses Corea, the design was made “without Maradona’s consent and without discussion with him.”

The fashion house used Diego’s name specifically in the collection for a reason. Maradona played for local club Napoli from 1984 to 1991, and for many fans from the area he remains a legendary soccer player.

Dolce & Gabbana founders Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have spoken out about the lawsuit. Gabbana stated:

We wanted to pay respect to Napoli and Maradona. He is great, we just wanted to pay tribute to him.
