Why watch the Olympics: 5 reasons to turn on the broadcast today

The Olympic Games are a powerful sporting ritual that defines the lives of athletes for years to come. Entire cities are built for the competition, thousands of additional jobs are created, new products are produced, and scientific discoveries in the field of medicine are made on the basis of athletes’ performances. The Olympics is a global event, but why should we watch it?

To keep up with the news agenda

The Olympics are the biggest event that brings thousands of people around the world together. Normally we live two years from Olympics to Olympics, but the epidemic made adjustments and we waited only six months.

The news from the summer competitions has only just subsided, and we are already in a wave of new news stories. Such scale obliges to the appropriate audience coverage – in the next couple of weeks your news feeds will be filled with notes and memes, and maybe even critical statements of your friends (or enthusiastic, if our hockey team can).

To make sure you don’t get left behind during a break in the planner or while chatting with friends, it’s worth keeping an eye on our national team’s progress, or at least the overall medal standings.

Support our athletes

If you think that athletes win medals only for selfish reasons, I’ll take the liberty to argue with you. The support of the stands and the public is critical to an athlete.

They are regular people who also read the comments and sometimes even engage in controversy or respond in direct.

In the environment that has accompanied our national team’s performances for several years now, support “from home” means a hell of a lot.

See what’s going to be fashionable for the next few years

For all sports style enthusiasts and just modern fashionistas, the Olympics are the biggest catwalk that dictates trends for the near future. Designers sew large-scale collections especially for athletes and fans, brands release capsule products with the symbols and identity of sports.

All the images that we will see in Olympic reports or on athletes’ pages can be safely adopted – marketers have already worked and soon it will appear in free (or not so free) access.

Get a boost of motivation

Every Olympic athlete’s story is a huge dose of inspiration. Successful athletes are people who are intrinsically motivated and love their training, not just the competition. They dedicate every day to working on themselves, sacrificing equally important things along the way.

Each victory carries with it a huge background that some athletes are happy to talk about, inspiring ordinary people. Champion figure skater Dorothy Hamill said:

There were times when I was so tired, so sick of training, my mind was somewhere else at the time. But eventually I would start thinking about the future: oh, there’s a competition in a few months. Yep, there’s light at the end of the tunnel after all. And then things got better.

Watching the Olympics, reading interviews with athletes and their coaches, being inspired by great personalities and developing a strong spirit is a great opportunity to set a new goal for yourself.

Release emotions

Everyday life is predictable, but the Olympics can add a lot of excitement to it. We lack sharp emotions, including, strangely enough, negative ones. This explains why, even if the team we are rooting for loses, we often don’t turn off the broadcast, but continue to follow the story.

Sport is one of the best ways of replacing aggression invented by mankind. It is known that the Greeks began to organize the Olympic Games to make a break in the endless internecine conflicts: during the competition all wars were suspended. Moreover, this theory works on the spectators of such competitions exactly the same way as on the participants.

Of course, positive identity is equally important. Victories of favorite athletes give a huge amount of positive emotions and can make more than one subsequent day sunny.

Russia once again went to the Games without a flag and anthem, but the strongest athletes will compete in Beijing, and it’s definitely worth watching.
