5 incredible places to get away alone for a couple of days

Traveling alone is a unique experience that everyone should have at least once. Spontaneous decisions and the possibility to deviate from the route at any time fill such trips with the spirit of absolute freedom. However, for those who are going solo for the first time, it is better to choose proven and safe destinations, such as in the examples below.

I have selected five solo travel destinations for you. They can be divided into two groups: places for those who are looking for new acquaintances or for those who want to be alone.

To get acquainted and make friends

Pereslavl-Zalessky

A trip to Pereslavl-Zalessky (at least from Moscow) can be considered as a training start before a “serious” solo travel. In a couple of hours from the capital it is easy to try on the role of a solo-tourist for the first time and to decide with the most comfortable format: either solitude and “dissolution” in the nature on the shore of Pleshcheyev Lake, or dynamic weekend in the company of new acquaintances. There are enough reasons for acquaintances in Pereslavl. These are the aeronautics festival, which turns Yaroslavl region into a small Cappadocia, and thematic excursions, and master classes in local craft museums.

Sochi

Summer Sochi is another optimal option for a solo traveler’s “debut”. Firstly, there are direct flights from most major Russian cities. Secondly, the infrastructure is adapted for solo travelers, and the hotels have single rooms, which allows you not to overpay for accommodation.

You don’t have to book a room in advance and set off on a spontaneous adventure. Clear planning in traveling is not necessary at all.

In Sochi it is easy to check whether you are comfortable being alone with yourself in principle, and if necessary, immediately make new acquaintances. To do this, just look at one of the popular beaches, for example, “Mandarin”. You will definitely not be left without company.

Krasnodar

For the last couple of years this city has won the title of the bar capital of Russia from St. Petersburg, and after bartenders (professionally engaged in cocktail preparation) from the north to the south went and connoisseurs of author’s drinks and unique bar atmosphere. The closer to the weekend, the higher the probability to meet interesting interlocutors behind the bar and agree with them on a walk around Krasnodar. And there is a place to walk around: in the center, along Red Street, and a little farther away – in the park “Krasnodar”, to which you should devote the whole day.

Staying alone with yourself

Valaam

More secluded places are also suitable for experienced “loners” – for example, Valaam Island. You can go to the heart of the Ladoga both for pilgrimage purposes and in search of complete detachment from the world: there are plenty of places where nobody will disturb you on the archipelago.

The way to Valaam is also interesting – by “meteors” or river motorboats. Ladoga often shows its uneasy character, reminding more like an open sea than a lake. The more interesting and exciting is the route, which is to be traveled alone.

Abkhazia

“The country of the soul” is known for hospitality, from which it can be difficult to hide. But it is possible. The very first and main recommendation – stay away from tourist locations, choosing to visit not beaches or crowded Ritsa, but, for example, Akarmara – a ghost town in Eastern Abkhazia.

The abandoned mining village of Akarmara illustrates how the planet could look like after the human era. And if you visit it alone, it creates a stunningly realistic effect of immersion in the post-apocalypse.

Curonian Spit

Unlike Zelenogradsk and Svetlogorsk, which are popular with tourists, there are still places on the Curonian Spit where you can hide from the crowd and enjoy the restrained beauty of northern nature all alone. It is better to look for them closer to the Lithuanian border. However, you can also get away from the tourist spots like Efa Heights or Dancing Forest to absolutely secluded beaches. But for this purpose it is better to come to Kaliningrad region in low season – from October to April.
