“If you can look at flowing water for quite a long time, you can look at waterfalls endlessly. Powerful and barely visible, gentle and falling from sheer cliffs – these streams of elements mesmerize and do not let you look away. No matter how many waterfalls you meet on your way, each next one will be different from the previous one. I will tell you about the most interesting ones below.

Agurskie waterfalls, Sochi

For me, as someone who grew up in Sochi, Agurskie Falls became my first “guides” to the world of exciting travels – first in my native Krasnodar Krai. Located between the rivers Khosta and Matsesta, they meet tourists on the way to the legendary Akhun Mountain.

But Agur waterfalls are interesting in themselves. According to the legend, their streams are a beautiful girl turned into a river by Zeus for helping the guilty Prometheus. Enraged, the lord of Olympus threw the beautiful girl to the bottom of the gorge, where she turned into a picturesque water stream. Even today, thousands of tourists come to see this beauty every year.

Talnikov waterfall on the Putorana Plateau

Located in the heart of the Putorana plateau, the Talnikov waterfall is considered the highest in Russia – but also the most volatile. Falling from a height of more than 900 meters, it shows its power only for one or two months a year, during the period of active glacier melting. And in winter it freezes, turning into a grandiose kilometer-long icicle.

By the way, it is quite possible that the Talnikovs are called not one but several waterfalls on Putorana: scientists and researchers admit that due to the variable nature of the flow and the little study of this area, several spillways can be mistaken for one and the same object.

Ilya Muromets, Iturup Island

To see the Kuril Ilya Muromets with your own eyes, you need to be a very determined person. To get to Sakhalin first, then to Iturup Island, and finally to Medvezhy Peninsula.

But that’s not all: Ilya Muromets descends directly into the ocean, so you can see him only from the water. However, rare lucky people assure that the spectacle is worth all the effort: the contact of two natural elements remains in the memory, if not for life, then for a very long time.

Kivach, Karelia

Kivach in Karelia proves that you don’t have to break height records to attract crowds of tourists. Kivach is a flat waterfall stretching for 170 meters with a total height of only about 10 meters. What is impressive is the furious power with which the rivers Suna and Shuya carry their waters through the Karelian taiga.

Kivach is also distinguished by the amazing color of the water: in different weather it appears creamy-white, or – in the words of ordinary people – “the color of cola”. And in bright sunshine a rainbow of amazing beauty blooms over the waterfall, creating unique visual effects.

Uchar, Altai

The Bolshoi Chulchinsky Waterfall, or Uchar, is one of the hidden gems of the Altai Mountains. The huge multi-cascade spillway was formed not so long ago, about 130 years ago, as a result of displacement of rocks. And the first mentions of it appeared only at the beginning of the last century.

The Altai toponym “Uchar” appeared for a reason: its meaning is “impregnable”. Today, to get to the waterfall, you need to overcome about nine kilometers of mountain road and face a couple of natural obstacles. As a reward, Uchar will give you an impressive view of the spillway cascades surrounded by wild Altai forest.
