If during the day you solve ten problems, with nine – effectively, and one – not very much, about which, most likely, will be agonizing to think before going to bed? The answer for many is obvious. The same thing often happens with our strengths and weaknesses. Much more attention is paid to weaknesses, while abilities and advantages are taken for granted.

Why is it important to see your strengths and how to address them?

As children, many of us were scolded for something specific and praised with an abstract “well done” without emphasizing what exactly we did well. At school, red – the brightest and most prominent color – was mostly used to point out mistakes, not those places in the tests that were particularly successful.

Add to this the fact that talking about yourself and emphasizing personal skills was considered shameful, while modesty and the ability to be inconspicuous (and comfortable) were encouraged. Many of us were not taught how to recognize our strengths, and so the most difficult question to ask in the first interviews was not “What are your weaknesses?” but “How can you be useful to us?”

How does that hurt a person?

It’s simple. We can spend our whole lives thinking we are mediocre, when in fact we just don’t know how to focus on what we do better than most. This gets in the way of both fulfillment and earning a decent living. It is difficult to unlock personal potential when you are trapped in the framework of habitual ideas about yourself and do not ask yourself: “What are my superpowers?”.

By the way, it’s not necessarily about a specific profession. A power is something you pass on by putting into everything you do. For example, the ability to pay attention to detail, to find a common language with people.

And it is also something that will give pleasure, because the realization of your potential always brings satisfaction and relieves internal tension. Most often the activity in this direction and will be the one that you really like.

Finding your life’s work is the foundation of the Japanese philosophical concept of ikigai. Read more about it HERE.

4 лайфхака, чтобы распознать суперсилу

To identify personal strengths, it’s important to know yourself very well. That’s why you need to start by getting to know yourself. What kind of person are you? The next step is to utilize the information you’ve gained.

1. Understand who you are

Ask yourself questions: “What do I like to do? What do I like to do? What does my comfortable space look like? What kind of lifestyle regimen is right for me? What inspires me?”. Ask yourself and over time you will learn to recognize and feel the answers from your own Self.

2. Identify what you have always been good at

At first glance, these may be obvious things that you think, “Come on, isn’t everyone else’s?” But as you observe others, you may notice that they have a harder time with these moments.

It is worth researching and systematizing your past experiences: not only at school and work, but also in everyday situations. You can ask people close to you. Sometimes they are able to point out things that we ourselves would not consider a strength. Such feedback can be interesting and open your eyes to a new facet of yourself.

3- Identify the leitmotif of different actions

You may have been good at something specific in each job – making decisions in critical situations, smoothing over conflicts, etc. Perhaps you have a keen eye for visual presentation of information, and without even noticing it, you apply it to everything from structuring family schedules to selecting inspiring collages for photo shoots.

You need to ask yourself the following questions:

  • What are you really strong at?
  • What can you enjoy doing for long enough?
  • What details make any task easier and more enjoyable for you?

4. consult a specialist

You can get help from a psychologist or a coach. It is important that the person specializes in this area. There are many professional tests and different techniques, combining which will be able to collect information about yourself.

Nevertheless, it is better to start with self-diagnosis. It is you who are able to notice the most subtle details and nuances. The help of a specialist may still be required, because some people do not even allow the idea that they have some strong points. Others, recognizing their presence, are just very afraid to show themselves.

Sometimes we find it difficult to identify key strengths, not because we don’t have the skill to emphasize them, but because we don’t see our value at all. The very thought of recognizing any talents seems strange… Give yourself permission to go outside the box and explore the most unexpected sides of your personality

What does it take to know your superpower?

Identifying and manifesting your strengths is one of the most important things you can do to connect deeply with yourself. It helps you find the very purpose that is so much talked about today. Realizing your inner potential gives you peace of mind. All of this increases the quality of life and makes a person happier.

When we begin to see our strengths and uniqueness, it becomes easier to realize that each of us is really different. You are not an exception to this rule, not some mediocrity.

If a person knows what he or she is strong at, he or she has a backbone in case of a difficult situation. He has the ability to turn everything to his advantage and create a comfortable context. And also – realizing our uniqueness, we begin to treat other people differently. Now we see that they are also individuals who need certain conditions for self-disclosure.

For example, your attitude towards your own children may change. There will be no desire to immediately enclose the child in the framework of your idea of him/her. You will want to help the process of self-disclosure, the search for that personal superpower. Let the baby pay attention to what he does particularly well – in whatever activity it manifests itself. Good luck to you and your children!
