New norm. How much a man and a woman should weigh at their age now

Every person at least once in their life has wondered how much they should weigh. Someone worries about it every day. It is clear that there cannot be one specific answer to this question, because each person has his or her own ideal individual weight. This is influenced by height, gender, the ratio of fat and muscle, type of figure, tendency to chronic diseases.

Still, there are various tables that allow us to systematize our knowledge and bring it to the right form. And also new studies that lead to very curious conclusions about the ideal weight of a man and a woman. Here, too, there is a “new normal” of sorts.

The Lorenz formula

One of the most famous ways to find out how much a person should weigh is the Lorenz method. The ease of application is not the only advantage of this method. The concept of ideal body weight is always relative, but the obvious advantage of the Lorenz formula can be considered that it allows you to obtain a figure that is close to much more complex formulas.

In principle, to apply the Lorenz formula, it is not even necessary to look for a calculator. All calculations can be done in your mind. The formula looks like this: X – 100 – (X – 150)/2; where X is the numerical value of height taken in centimeters.

For example, your height is 176 centimeters. First, we subtract 100 from X and get 76. Then we subtract 150 from X and divide the resulting value by two. (176-150)/2=13. And count the difference of the first and second: 76-13=63. So with a height of 176 cm, the normal weight of a person should be 63 kg.

There is an even more simplified formula Lorenz, where you need from half of the value of growth, taken in centimeters, subtract 25. For simplicity of calculation let’s take the height of 180 cm. 180/2 – 25=65. At a height of 180 cm you should weigh 65 kg.

Advanced method of calculating weight

However, the Lorenz method does not take into account such important parameters as body type, age and others. For this purpose, more advanced methods are used. The ideal body weight according to Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. is calculated based on three body types: asthenic, normosthenic and hypersthenic.

Asthenics have narrow bones, long limbs and a thin layer of subcutaneous fat. Normostenics have anatomical features approaching the average parameters of the norm. Hyperstenics as a rule have low height and well-developed musculature.

According to this table, in asthenic men with a height of 180 cm, the ideal weight varies between 65-69 kg. In normostenics – 67-74 kg, in hyperstenics can approach 80 kg. In women, let’s take the height of 170 cm. With these indicators in asthenic women, the ideal weight should be in the neighborhood of 53-57 kg, and in more powerful hyperstenics can reach 67 kg.

A difference of 10 kg at the same height is significant. So, when assessing the figure, you need to consider not only the bare numbers, but rely on a number of other indicators. You can be skinny, but because of the muscles weigh more than a person who at a glance clearly likes to eat.

What changes as you age?

Of course, another major factor is the age of the person. There is a table according to Egorov and Levitsky, which systematizes and shows the relationship between age and weight of men and women.

Thus, a man aged 20 to 29 years at a height of 180 cm should weigh 85 kg. A woman with the same initial data – 80 kg. If we take a man aged 30 to 39 years old with a height of 170 cm, we get a calculated body weight of 77.7 kg. For women at the same age and with the same height parameters, the weight should be 75 kg.

You are probably surprised by such data, especially on the female side. But according to research, modern women weigh on average 6 kg more than 20 years ago. And if we talk about men and women together, the average person began to weigh 5 kg more than before.

Here plays a role and poor metabolism, and even the environment. In fact, the main cause of obesity and hunger is the same – improper nutrition.
