Thoughts that keep you from exercising

Often, motivation alone is not enough to get up the courage to go to the gym. Every day we come up with an endless number of excuses not to start exercising once again. The expert of “Championship” wellness coach Andrei Semeshov told us how to stop feeling sorry for ourselves and talk ourselves out of it.

“I don’t need it, I’m fine as I am.”

First of all, let me congratulate you. And secondly, a word of caution. Even if you like yourself in the mirror without any gyms, it does not mean that you can not do yourself. Nature has programmed us to live up to 25-35 years old at most. Then the warranty period, in general, ends.

The modern pace of development of anti-age medicine gives hope that soon centenary anniversaries will become commonplace. But the question arises about the quality of this life. Doctors can conquer many diseases that a few decades ago were incurable. But no doctor, no nano-technology will give a load to your muscles and joints instead of you. Therefore, it is better to accept the idea that certain physical activity is simply necessary.

Progress has evolved to the point that for many, even walking a distance greater than “driveway to car” is a rarity. We do not engage a very large percentage of our muscle mass. Our “parts”, like a clockwork mechanism, can rust if not used. So even if you like yourself in the mirror, that’s not enough reason to ignore exercise.

The low cost of good bargains is now commonly priced in cups of coffee. (“Our product equals the price of just a couple cups of coffee!”). I suggest coming up with the time equivalent of 21 minutes in the comments to prove to ourselves that it is actually possible to find time for sports.

“At my age, running/jumping/lifting dumbbells is not healthy!”

In fact, there is nothing more harmful than not moving. Even after a serious injury, the most important component (after successful surgery) is follow-up rehabilitation. If you continue to coddle the damaged joint, it will remain a pain point for the rest of your life – you can neither unbend nor bend it. But if you start to develop it properly, slowly increasing the load, it is likely to return the former flexibility and mobility.

In one experiment, men aged well over 70 were divided into two groups. One control group – the participants of which led the same lifestyle. The second group under the supervision of trainers performed only one exercise – leg extension in the knee joint in a power simulator. I can’t remember exactly how long the experiment lasted, but its results stick in my memory. The state of quadriceps muscle fibers in the subjects at the end of the tests biologically corresponded to the age of 40-45 years. And this is just one exercise and just one muscle group. And if you dream that you will carry out such an experience not for a few weeks, but for decades and start it not at such a venerable age?

If you’re worried that it’s impossible to get pumped this way, don’t worry. I managed to escape to the beaches of Crete this summer. I decided to go to a local gym and asked the most relief and voluminous guy, which one he would recommend to go to. I got the answer that he works out exclusively on the bars and tourniquets. And he wishes me the same.

“If I start going to the gym, I’ll become like a man.”

Ladies, to make a long story short, you won’t. Even if you try really hard. All to blame for the production of the hormone testosterone, which is largely responsible for gaining muscle mass. In female organisms, it is produced in amounts insufficient to at least get close to “become like a man”. For understanding, the upper peak values of testosterone in women are not even half of the minimum level in men.

What about bodybuilders? You don’t want the same, don’t wonder where anabolic steroids are sold. And everything will be as nature intended.

“I tried it, I didn’t like it.”

You’re not alone here. We are so organized that when there are options between doing or not doing, our brains will always vote in favor of slacking off. And when it comes to physical activity, few people are very enthusiastic, especially at first.

The first option – a little bit of walking “through can not”. There is a high probability that you will get involved and start to enjoy even heavy workouts. Among other things, because the body in response to such sadism will begin to release special substances into the bloodstream, which are similar in effect… with light drugs.

Another conversation that not everyone likes to spend time in fitness centers. So don’t torture yourself. Find an alternative form of physical activity. At home, or in the fresh air. There are a lot of options. For the purposes of maintaining yourself in a functional state is suitable and tennis, and swimming, and Nordic walking. Maybe in childhood you enjoyed playing soccer or hockey. Or went to karate. Or ballroom dancing. Well, adults can do the same.

“I’m already tired at work, where else can I go for sports?”

This is indeed sometimes a serious reason to refrain from additional loads. And if the work is associated with high physical activity, it may well be enough.

Another thing if we talk about sedentary office work, which can also be very exhausting. Here we are talking about fatigue of the nervous system, and stories about the fact that the active work of the brain should eat more, complete nonsense. Calorie consumption in mindlessly clicking on the sofa TV remote control and playing a chess match for the title of world champion will differ by negligible amounts. So you will have to overpower yourself and crawl to the gym or to the tourniquets on your moral willpower. And rest assured that even if at first the additional load will exhaust you even more, then very soon you will be surprised to realize that you have become much more active at home and at work.
