Fish, meat or chicken: what to eat when traveling?

When traveling, it is difficult to adhere to the principles of good nutrition: constant snacking, unfamiliar stores and cafes. It’s easier to plan your meals and prepare food in advance if you have an established routine. We will try to help minimize worries about eating on the road.

A few simple rules will help take the stress out of traveling.

● Plan your diet in advance.
● No food can hurt you if you eat it once. It can be anything.
● Don’t worry if the whole day goes wrong, but start the next one with oatmeal and a glass of water.

On board an airplane

It is important to consider not only the exact time of the flight, but also all the time periods before and after it. If in the first half of the journey you can count on home-cooked food, then further on you have to rely on the menus of cafes and restaurants. Be prepared that your usual diet may be disturbed. First of all, eat before you leave the house. This food should satiate you, but be careful not to feel uncomfortable while traveling. Your goal is to get through the day as efficiently as possible and not waste energy searching for food.

Take at least one meal with you. For example, a sandwich or a boiled egg and vegetables. Next, you will have to act depending on the situation. Some airlines allow you to take food on the plane, while others give you the option to choose a menu: dietary, vegetarian or children’s. Visit your airline’s website before your flight and familiarize yourself with the meals offered. There are also services that deliver food practically on board the airplane.

Most importantly, don’t be patient for too long if you don’t have the “right” food nearby. You need energy, so any food that can provide it is the “right” food. A few important details.

● Observe your portion size. Try not to overeat.
● Choose the dish with the most vegetables.
● Remember that sauces contain the most useless calories.
● Favor a heartier dish. This is important if you have a lot of time to spend on the road.
● Drink more water. Airplanes tend to have dry air, so it’s easy to lose a lot of fluids unnoticed. Make sure your body doesn’t require water first. We often tend to confuse feeling hungry and thirsty.

In the car or train

If you are traveling by car or train, the task becomes a little easier: you can take the necessary food with you in containers. Take foods that don’t spoil for a long time. For example, hard-boiled eggs, chicken breast, chopped vegetables, lentils, or whole wheat bread and cheese sandwiches.

Have a plan of action ready, but be prepared for any situation. The important thing is to enjoy the journey and not to fixate solely on healthy foods.
