From St. Petersburg to Vladivostok. 5 most beautiful embankments in Russia

“Cities on the water are incredibly lucky – not only in terms of economy, but also the quality of life of citizens. And if there is a beautiful promenade along a lake, river or sea, their attractiveness increases many times over. I will tell you below where to walk by the water to get maximum impressions”.

Amur embankment, Blagoveshchensk

Blagoveshchensk is a unique city. Not only in itself, but also due to its geographical neighborhood with Chinese Heihe. The best views of the Celestial Empire open from the Amur embankment, which separates not just two cities, but two countries. In a few years they will be connected by the world’s first cross-border cable car, and the number of people walking along the embankment will surely increase dramatically.

In the meantime, it is quite free and comfortable here: you can see the facades of the Chinese neighbor in detail and stroke the nose of the bronze Druzhok, the legendary dog that faithfully waited for its owners during the flood of 2013, for good luck.

Tsesarevich Embankment, Vladivostok

The Pacific Ocean begins at the eastern borders of the country, and Tsesarevich Embankment in Zolotoy Rog Bay neatly leads to it. The views opened from the embankment are considered Vladivostok’s calling card. And you can see much from here: the cable-stayed Golden Bridge floating in the fog over the bay, and scattered art objects, and grandiose harbor cranes, and, of course, ships.

Tsesarevich Embankment is one of the few “flat” places of Vladivostok standing on hills, so you can always meet cyclists and rollers here and join them. And in warm time, the embankment hosts impromptu concerts and performances – even music sounds differently in the scenery of the Golden Horn.

Nizhne-Volzhskaya Embankment, Nizhny Novgorod

The one and a half kilometer promenade under the walls of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin is a favorite place for walks of citizens and tourists. The views from here are without exaggeration outstanding – the confluence of the Oka and the Volga, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the futuristic soccer stadium built for the World Cup.

It is to the Nizhne-Volzhskaya embankment descends the famous Chkalovskaya staircase, at the top of which residents and guests of the “capital of sunsets” gather every evening in the hope to spend the passing day beautifully. And after sunset, it is pleasant to continue your walk along the “sister” of the Nizhne-Volzhskaya embankment – the Verkhne-Volzhskaya embankment.

Imeretinskaya Embankment, Sochi

Stretching for 7 kilometers to the border with Abkhazia, Imeretinskaya Embankment is one of the youngest, modern and beautiful in Greater Sochi. It is divided into two parts – pedestrian and bicycle, which allows lovers of all kinds of recreation to enjoy walks and rides without interfering with each other.

The panoramas opening from Imeretinki are timeless Sochi classics: snow-capped mountain peaks and the gentle Black Sea. The Olympic venues, which are within walking distance from the embankment, are a bonus.

Universitetskaya Embankment and Malaya Nevka Embankment, St. Petersburg

There are almost 100 rivers and about 50 embankments in St. Petersburg – it would be wrong to choose just one. To get a feel for the “water” element of the Northern Capital, it’s worth walking along at least a couple of them. Start with Universitetskaya, which offers a fantastic view of the facades of the central part of St. Petersburg, the dome of St. Isaac’s Cathedral and the port shipyards.

And to continue in a completely different atmosphere – on the wooden embankment of Malaya Nevka on Krestovsky Island, which has become an example of successful improvement of the once vacant territory. The embankment itself is small, but from it it is easy to walk to St. Petersburg’s new architectural dominants – the Gazprom Arena, the white cable-stayed bridge and the best vantage point of the Lakhta Center skyscraper.
