Alcohol has been around for centuries. And despite its negative impact on the body, no generation has abandoned it.

What are the main harms of alcohol?

Let’s look at five key factors.

  • Mental state. Alcohol can cause aggression, anger, tension, stress and depression.
  • Brain function. Alcohol use can “slow down” the brain, provoke memory loss and impair neuronal function. This is due to the effects of ethanol (alcohol), which can even cause thrombosis.
  • Poisoning. Every year, more than 50 thousand people die from alcohol consumption – and this is only on the territory of Russia. Regular consumption of alcohol reduces life expectancy. On average, 10-15 drinks a week – for 1-2 years.
  • Effect on internal organs. Algol negatively affects the work of the kidneys, liver, gastrointestinal tract and heart. This leads to premature illnesses and decreased performance of organs.
  • Dependence. Alcohol causes an addiction that is difficult to get rid of. Starting with small doses, people often do not notice how it becomes a habit and every day it affects their life more and more, changing it for the worse.

This particular rating of 2020 has become perhaps the most widespread, but it was not possible to confirm the source. The Belarusian Ministry of Health denied this information, specifying that outdated data was used to compile the ranking.

According to the Global Study on Drugs and Alcohol 2021, as reported by the Daily Mail, in the ranking of the most “drinking” countries, the places were distributed as follows:

  1. Australia
  2. Denmark
  3. Finland
  4. Great Britain
  5. USA

Within the framework of the study from December 2020 to March 2021-but interviewed 32 thousand people from 22 countries (Russia did not participate in the survey).

But there are also countries where the consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited. In total, there are 41 countries with a complete ban on alcoholic beverages. In most Muslim countries, alcohol consumption is prosecuted by law. And in Scandinavia, there are programs to prohibit drinking alcohol.

China has also started to actively fight for the sober lifestyle of its citizens, opening free treatment centers for those who suffer from alcohol addiction.
