7 important safety rules when tubing. Memo for parents

Many people have been waiting impatiently for the time to ride “cotton buns” down the hill, and it has finally come. This winter fun is loved not only by children, but also by adults. And this means that it is time to remember the rules of safety. After all, trouble can be waiting not only on the slope itself, but also after you have already ridden down the hill.

What can be dangerous tubing

Julia Panteleyeva

doctor of sports medicine, rehabilitation specialist, expert of the Academy of doctors UniProf

Of course, injuries after tubing are very common in winter. If we consider skiing on professional slopes, the risk of getting injured there is minimal. These are properly prepared slopes, which are taken care of, a verified and safe route without additional hazards. Injuries in skiing centers threaten only in case of non-compliance with safety techniques.

When the slope is chosen independently, the slides are not equipped, stony, have ledges, often children and adults ride towards the road (which is also very unsafe), there are slides that end with bushes and trees, the risk of injury increases. Moreover, there are no instructors to supervise the children. Often children ride without their parents (teenagers), do not keep the distance, which causes injuries.

It is impossible to calculate the exact route independently, and the “water-truck” develops quite a high speed. It is almost impossible to change the speed mode, jump off or change the route.

With what injuries children and adults get to the traumatology in winter after “wild” tubing: spinal fracture, head contusions, brain concussion, fractures of limbs, contusions of limbs. The range of injuries is large, but the risk of injury is high if the skating is unequipped, unsupervised by a trainer or at least an adult.

Safety Techniques

And now let’s move on to the safety rules that are important to follow so that skating brings only pleasure.

Strictly forbidden:

  • riding on the “water trampolines” together with the owners of iron sleds;
  • to go down the slide with several tubes hitched together at the same time – “steam train”;
  • to ride standing or lying on the stomach;
  • sitting in a single-seat bagel with a large group;
  • try to steer or brake with your feet during the descent;
  • use icy slopes with jumps, bumps and other irregularities, including rocks, trees and other natural terrain elements for tubing;
  • tie the tubing to vehicles.

What else is important to know:

  • When buying or renting a “watertrucks” it is necessary to take into account the height of the child. Up to 100 cm, the diameter of the tube should be about 85 cm. When pair skating, the diameter should be increased to 120 cm and necessarily have four handles;
  • the slide should have a slope of no more than 20 degrees. At the bottom, there must be perimeter fences and a braking zone;
  • it is essential to keep the correct distance between descents. The next “tubing” can go only when the previous child has completely finished his descent and released the slope;
  • it is highly undesirable to ride the tuba together with a child. Such a ride can be unsafe for both the riders and other people on the slide. Believe me, you will not be able to fully control the situation.

As you can see, there are not very many rules. Let us remind you once again: you should always follow the rules of safety when skating to avoid dire consequences for yourself and others.

How to dress your child to keep him warm

Julia Panteleeva: Ideally, of course, anoraks, ski pants and hoodies – ski equipment. Special clothing does not let the wind pass, does not get wet, so even after active games the baby will not freeze, will not get cold.

In general, the cold as such is not the cause of the disease, we must remember that an important role is played by the state of immunity. A healthy child will not get sick after active games in any weather.

Of course, it is worth taking care of the presence of waterproof gloves and a hat to protect the head and hands not only from the cold, but also from contact with snow and earth.

In general, clothing should be as waterproof and windproof as possible, keeping warm. Natural fabrics – closer to the body, and waterproof – outside.

By the way, tubing is a very energy-consuming activity. We have calculated how many calories are burned when going down and up the hill. Find the answer here.
