What happens if you eat grape seeds? Doctor answers

Elizaveta Kochetkova

GUTA CLINIC gastroenterologist

“Grape seeds are crunchy and have a bitter taste. However, this does not mean that they should necessarily be spit out. They contain a number of compounds that are beneficial to the body. For example, antioxidants, flavonoids and melatonin. However, their consumption in unlimited quantities can lead to serious consequences”.

Composition and benefits of grape seeds

A grape berry contains about two seeds, which make up about 5% of the weight of the grape. However, their number and weight depend on the average size of the fruit.

Grape seeds are a complex structure. They contain 40% fiber, 16% oil, 11% protein and 7% complex phenols such as tannins. They are also a great source of vitamins C and E, antioxidants known as flavonoids, which can improve skin texture and reduce signs of aging.

The seeds are quite hard and pass through the digestive system unchanged. Although they are safe to eat, it is recommended to chew them before swallowing to break them up for better digestion and nutrient absorption.

Is it safe to eat grape seeds?

Alina Krasikova

GP, family physician at HSC Digital Clinic

“If you eat grape seeds all the time, it can lead to digestive system dysfunction. In addition, the seeds can damage teeth and gums, especially in children.”

There is a myth that the seeds of the fruit can cause colon cancer, but this has not been confirmed by scientific studies. However, they can cause irritation of the stomach and intestines, as well as constipation and abdominal pain.

Symptoms that indicate problems after consuming grape seeds may include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation and diarrhea. If you experience these signs, it is imperative that you contact your doctor immediately.

Precautions when consuming grape seed include the following:

  • not to consume in large quantities;
  • do not give to children;
  • not to use as a substitute for other foods.

It is best to consume seedless grapes or use them to make oils and cosmetics.

Can I take grape seed extract every day?

Elizabeth Kochetkova: It is obtained by removing, drying and crushing the seeds. They account for 60-70% of the fruit’s total polyphenols. These antioxidants help protect blood vessels from damage. The extract also helps in treating hypertension or high blood pressure.

The product is generally safe. Among the side effects, headache, itchy scalp, dizziness and nausea are possible. People who are prone to allergies should not use this extract.

Dosages of about 300-800 mg per day for 8-16 weeks have been found to be safe and well tolerated in humans. Pregnant and lactating women should refrain from taking it, as there is insufficient data on its effects on these populations.

Is grape seed oil useful?

Although grapeseed oil is generally considered beneficial, it, like other oils, should be consumed in moderation. A small serving of grapeseed oil (one tablespoon) contains about 120 calories. Excessive consumption can lead to an increased risk of excessive body weight.

Common side effects include nausea, itching, dizziness, upset stomach, diarrhea, headache, sore throat, cough and rash. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take grape seed supplements.
