“You should go into Thai boxing with a full wallet.” The athlete’s mom calculated the costs

Children’s energy is often boundless. Sometimes it’s not even clear where to channel it. At such times, sports come to the rescue. Training not only fascinates, but also disciplines. For many parents, such a hobby becomes a real salvation, because the child realizes himself and does what he really wants.

We continue our text series about how much it costs to raise children-athletes. Today, the mom of a Thai boxing fighter shares her experience with us.

Yulia Volkova

Thai boxing athlete’s mom, fitness trainer.

There are many reasons why we give our children to sports: their talent, our unrealized dreams, health peculiarities and so on. Many people give their children to martial arts. Wrestling, karate, boxing, Thai boxing, kickboxing – all this is good, but there are not enough Olympic reserve schools, where everything is sponsored by the state, for the whole country.
Parents should rely on their own strength, because it is necessary to invest in a child in this direction with understanding and a full wallet.

Equipment

How dressed and how protected the child is in training in Thai boxing is very important. After all, martial arts is a very injury-prone sport. There are always injuries there, so a good set of protection is mandatory.

First of all, you need to protect your head, so you will need a helmet. At the initial stage you can buy a simple helmet, it will cost about 3 thousand rubles. But the further the athlete goes in the professional plan, the more good protection he needs. And it is expensive. A quality helmet will cost at least 8 thousand rubles.

Also the athlete will need a “shell” to protect the groin area. Usually we are “vaparized” plastic protection, but this is a very bad option. In the event of a blow, plastic can crack and cause serious damage to the genitals. It is better to buy metal “shells”, they cost from 3 thousand rubles and more.

The next item of expenditure is gloves. They are different and are selected according to individual criteria. The minimum is about 3-5 thousand rubles per pair.

Gloves are not put on bare hands, it is necessary to use bandages. They will fix the hand, joints and fingers. Bandages cost about 1000 rubles, but you need to change them often.

I advise you to choose quality equipment, even if you have to pay more. Good gloves and helmet can serve faithfully for up to two years.

Less quality equipment will wear out quickly, which means you will have to buy it again and again. And you’ll probably pay even more, because the same gloves will tear with every good fight.

Training clothes

The standard set is t-shirts, shorts. How many sets your child needs for training depends only on you.

As for competitions, clothes for them are bought separately. For district tournaments you can not buy expensive clothes, on average a simple set will cost 1.5-3 thousand rubles.

If a young athlete moves to higher leagues, the cost of a set of clothes, respectively, increases.

Diet and recovery

When practicing Thai boxing, the athlete’s body is exhausted, because it is a very energy-consuming sport. The resource must necessarily be replenished, special nutrition and vitamin complexes will help.

A young athlete needs a large amount of protein. This is meat in the first place and dairy products. Vegetarianism is not suitable for a young athlete in any case!

A child athlete develops in a completely different way. He really needs vitamins to function properly in training. Vitamins are a very important part of the diet. On average, the complex will cost from 1000 rubles. But you can also take individually calcium, magnesium, iron and so on.

To warm up muscles and strengthen ligaments, special ointments are used, they are available in different variants. Fighters usually use ointments from the Thai series, which are rich in the necessary ingredients. We use a cream that costs from 500 rubles.

Also, at least once a month you need to do a massage with elements of stretching, so that the muscles relax and do not clog. Here everything depends on the choice of a specialist, but it is a minimum of 3500 rubles for an hour session.

Individual and group training

Classes should be regular, it is a minimum of three group training sessions lasting 1,5-2 hours.

The price depends on the district and city, group classes per month cost on average about 5-7 thousand rubles. Here we are talking about the most common trainer, a professional with more experience will cost more.

Also very important is individual training to work out the strengths and weaknesses of the athlete. One “personal training” costs an average of 3.5 thousand rubles.

Training camps

The training process lasts nine months, in summer – June and July – athletes usually rest. And then training camps. They are mandatory: at campgrounds or even at sea.

Standard two-week training camps are from 70 thousand rubles. But in the end, they will come out to you in about 100 thousand rubles, because the coach is also paid separately. At the training camp athletes are constantly engaged, there is no such thing that they hang around without doing anything.

Competitions

The next stage is competitions. At ordinary tournaments, admission is free, you need to spend only on food, water and other trifles. But if we talk about larger championships, participants go there for free, but spectators pay tickets from 1.5 thousand rubles, depending on the place. This is the bare minimum for those who want to watch the tournament.

And now let’s summarize the results. In a year in the athlete in Thai boxing should be invested about 200 thousand rubles. Taking into account the fees and classes with private coaches. This is the minimum!

Sport for a child – a favorite hobby, occupation, and maybe even the purpose of life. The task of the parent to guide and help to reach heights, it is not only about the financial component, but also about the moral aspect. It is always important to fully support the child, reminding him that every merit is important.
