How is manuka honey different from regular honey? What are its benefits?

Manuka honey is one of the rarest varieties with unique qualities. What are they? This honey has an unusual color and aroma, is rich in healing properties, heals wounds and helps replenish energy reserves. We tell you about bioactive honey and its seven useful properties.

The unique healing abilities of honey are due to the presence of natural methylglyoxal (MGO) – an antibacterial substance. One kilogram contains from 100 to 1000 mg. This is 1,000 times more than in any other type of honey. For comparison, in the classic kinds of MGO – from 0 to 10 mg / kg. And the higher the concentration of methylglyoxal, the stronger the antibacterial qualities.

Depending on the content of this substance in honey varieties, the degree of its healing activity differs:

  • light – MGO 100+, UFM 10+;
  • high – MGO 250+, UMF 15+;
  • high – MGO 400+, UMF 20+;
  • hyperactive – MGO 550+, UMF 25+.

Manuka honey with 30+ MGO or 5+ UMF values is considered a regular edible honey with zero bactericidal effect. And the variant with the highest activity score of 400+ MGO and 20+ UMF can be used to treat illnesses and injuries:

  • runny nose and sore throat;
  • heartburn, stomach ulcers and gastritis;
  • dermatitis of various origins;
  • burns, wounds, rashes;
  • hangover syndrome;
  • stomach and intestinal disorders, irritable bowel syndrome;
  • inflammatory processes of the gums;
  • arthritis;
  • skin rashes and diseases (acne, ulcers, etc.);
  • nail fungus and herpes;
  • burns, surgical wounds, etc.

Superactive honey with MG 550+, UMF25+ is suitable for the treatment of infected wounds when used topically and orally.

What Manuka honey is good for

Strengthens the immune system

Thanks to the antibacterial methylglyoxal, manuka honey supports the respiratory and immune system when fighting colds, flu and more dangerous diseases.

Fights viruses and bacteria

Manuka honey is an excellent natural antibiotic and is used as a remedy to fight viral infections. It boosts immunity, prevents infection, and when a cold has already started, it relieves its symptoms and helps to get rid of sore throat and fever as soon as possible.

Improves the digestive system

Even one tablespoon of honey a day will benefit the digestive and gastrointestinal tract. Studies have proven that manuka honey stimulates the production of special enzymes and helps in the treatment of stomach ulcers.

Rejuvenates the body

Manuka honey has the valuable ability to draw moisture from the air and “pull” it into the skin, infusing the dermis layers with oxygen. In addition, the tandem of soothing, moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties of honey prolongs the youthfulness and beauty of the skin.

Helps in the treatment of wounds and acne

Honey’s antibacterial activity and high viscosity help create a protective barrier against skin infections, while its immunomodulatory properties accelerate wound healing. Honey protects the skin from bacteria and soothes inflammation on the face. To do this, just apply it directly on the skin and leave it on for at least 15 minutes.

It relieves coughs and sore throats

Honey will soothe the throat mucosa, and its antiviral and antibacterial properties will help reduce inflammation and get rid of the bacteria causing pain. You can put a small piece of honey in your mouth and slowly resorb it.

Gives you energy

Honey has a high density of nutrients. It satiates you and consequently increases your energy levels. Manuka honey is not only a pleasant addition to tea – it is a great fighter against fatigue.

Where to buy manuka honey?

You can usually find this honey in health food stores and large supermarkets. In addition, the product can be ordered on online marketplaces – but in this case you should be especially careful and buy honey only from trusted sellers.

Who should not eat manuka honey?

It is necessary to eat with caution honey for people with allergies to bee products and with diabetes mellitus. Consult your doctor before consumption. Children under the age of two years old are also not recommended to give honey, as there is a high risk of allergic reaction.

How to prepare a useful tea with manuka honey

You will need:

  • chaga tea powder – 1 tbsp;
  • fresh ginger – a small piece;
  • sea buckthorn berries – 1/4 cup;
  • Manuka honey – 1 tsp.

Grate the ginger on a grater, crush the sea buckthorn in a blender. Then pour all the components – except honey – hot water in a glass teapot and leave for 15-20 minutes. Add honey to a cup of slightly cooled tea.
