What to watch? 18 sports movies for New Year’s vacation

“Championship” has compiled its list of “sports” movies. It includes 18 movies about sports, which will tell you the stories of great athletes, famous clubs and just help you have fun on your New Year’s vacation.

“Pele: Birth of a Legend”

The story of a simple Brazilian boy who grew into one of the greatest soccer players of the planet. The picture tells about Pele’s childhood, his love for soccer, his family and growing up as a man and a soccer player. The movie will be interesting not only for soccer fans, but also for those who are far from the world of sports.

“United: The Munich Tragedy”.

The movie is based on real events. In February 1958, the “Red Devils” were returning home after a successful game with Belgrade “Crvena Zvezda” in the quarterfinals of the European Cup. However, the team never managed to fly home. The plane, on board of which in addition to the players of the team were representatives of the coaching staff, journalists and fans, failed to take off, resulting in tragedy. “Manchester United” lost most of its team, which consisted of young and promising players. However, head coach Sir Matt Busby and his assistant Jimmy Murphy managed to revive the club and once again make it one of the best not only in England, but also in the world.

“Goal”.

The first part of the trilogy “Goal” tells the story of an ordinary guy Santiago Munoz, who loves soccer more than anything else and dreams of playing at the professional level. In the first two films of the trilogy such famous soccer players as Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham, Alan Shearer, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos appear on the screen.

“Play Like Beckham.”

Another story of a man who loves soccer and dreams of playing in the best clubs in the world. This time the heroine of the picture is an Indian girl Jess. The girl’s family dreams of her being a lawyer, but the heroine herself longs to play soccer professionally and devotes all her free time to training. One day Jess meets Jules, who helps her to get into a women’s soccer club. The girl manages to get into a professional club, but she didn’t inform her parents about it.

“The Invisible Side”

The movie is based on real events and tells about a professional club player in American soccer Michael Oher. Michael loses his home and Leigh Ann Touhy comes to his rescue. She takes him under her guardianship and in time the guy becomes a member of the Tui family. Thanks to the support of the family Michael manages to enter the university and become a professional player.

“Rebel”

The main character of the movie is a gymnast Haley Graham. The girl used to have fame and popularity, but she loses everything and decides not to do professional gymnastics anymore. Everything changes when Haley almost goes to prison. The girl faces a choice: either go to a closed gymnastics school or go to jail for bullying. The girl chooses gymnastics and eventually finds friends and becomes a team leader.

“Lefty”.

Successful professional boxer Billy Hope overnight loses everything. During an accident his wife dies, after which his manager leaves and he is deprived of parental rights. For the sake of his daughter, Hope decides to start a new life. He starts training again and wants to regain his championship title.

About Diego Armando Maradona made a lot of movies. This picture tells the story of growing up the legendary Argentine. He grew up, fell in love, made mistakes, but despite this, he became one of the most legendary soccer players in the world.

“Legend #17”

Valery Kharlamov is a legendary Soviet hockey player, forward of the USSR national team. He was one of the leading Soviet hockey players and was repeatedly recognized as the best player of the country. The movie “Legend 17” is based on real events and is dedicated to the great hockey player and the legendary match of the USSR national team with Canada.

“Million Dollar Baby.”

Maggie Fitzgerald is a brave and persistent girl who loves boxing. She works as a waitress and one day decides to enroll in the boxing section. Maggie desperately wants to train, but the head coach and owner of the gym Frankie Dunn refuses to help her. The heroine herself begins to train, and in time Dunn notices the girl’s talent. Maggie starts to participate in competitions, and she manages to go to the fight for the title of WBA champion.

“The Man Who Changed Everything”

Billy Beane is the general manager of the Oakland Athletics baseball team. The main thing Billy wants is to build a baseball team that can compete. The team doesn’t have a lot of financial resources, but it does have a manager who knows exactly what scheme his team should follow.

The main character of the movie is Randy Robinson. Randy’s world revolves around wrestling. He is a popular and experienced fighter. Everything changes when doctors tell the hero that he has heart problems and needs to quit wrestling. The hero is faced with a choice: life or sport.

“Bonesetter”.

After the end of the professional career, some of the soccer players decide to become a coach, someone is an expert on television, and someone, like Eric Cantona or Vini Jones, choose the career of an actor. In the comedy “Bonesetter” Vini Jones plays Danny Meehan, a former soccer player who goes to prison. There Danny does not sit idle, he decides to create his own soccer team of prisoners and play against the wardens.

“Homicidal Football”

Another sports comedy is “Killing Football”. The picture was released 16 years ago, but it still has fans. Stephen Chow’s movie tells about Sin and his team. The main goal of Sin is to make kung fu popular all over the world. However, in addition to kung fu, Shin is also quite good with a ball, and this is noticed by former soccer player and coach Feng. Together they create a soccer team and apply for the Hong Kong championship.

“Never Give Up”

A youth drama that tells about mixed martial arts. The main character is Jake Tyler, who was the star of the soccer team. However, after moving to a new city, the hero does not manage to get along with local teenagers. Everything changes when the guy starts practicing martial arts with an experienced coach.

“Coach Carter”

The picture is based on real events from the life of former basketball player and coach Ken Carter. Carter becomes the coach of the school basketball team “Richmond Oilers”. Thanks to him, the team begins to show a stable game and win. However, Carter believes that in addition to sports, his players should study well. He decides not to allow players with poor school performance to play. This decision, of course, leads to criticism from parents and school authorities.

“The Fighter”.

Like the previous movie, this picture is based on the real life story of Micky Ward – boxer and former world champion. Micky was forced to take a break from his career, but at the urging of his half-brother Dicky, he decides to return to the ring.

“Force of Will.”

The story of African-American runner Jesse Owens. While still in high school, his coach noticed Jesse’s athletic ability, so he began training and then winning races. Thanks to his talent and persistence, the athlete went to the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936, where he managed to win four medals.

Run, Milka, Run

The picture is based on real events. The movie is dedicated to the Indian runner Milka Singh. Milka personally communicated with the director of the movie and talked about his life. The movie covers all the important moments of the athlete’s life: the loss of his family in 1947, victories in the Asian Games and the British Empire and Commonwealth Games, as well as participation in the Olympic Games.

This list would not be complete without one of the most popular movies about sports. The legendary film about boxer Rocky Balboa has long been a hit. The movie became the highest-grossing movie of 1976 and brought Sylvester Stallone worldwide fame. Perhaps even people who are not interested in sports, probably watched at least one of the parts of “Rocky”. The movie has millions of fans, and subsequent parts of the picture still attract viewers from all over the world.
