“On the Wave” (2019)

Type of sport: surfing.

Note: the movie will premiere on February 7.

“On the Wave” is the first large-scale Russian movie that tells about the beauty of the ocean and surfing, revealing both its sporting side and philosophical side. The movie immerses the viewer in the fates of different people, forcing to experience the sincere feelings of each of them. Someone fights with his fears, and someone fights for the opportunity to remain himself, breaking the established social stereotypes and merging with the pristine nature.

The movie weaves together two stories – the story of Masha, a Russian girl who dreams of catching her first wave, and 11-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater. Masha, already knowing everything about surfing in theory, comes to Bali to learn to surf, but faces her main problem – fear of deep water.

The second character in the movie is Kelly Slater. He tells his story of his surfing career and how he manages to spend 11 years winning his first titles and holding the lead in one of the most challenging sports. For the first time in his life, he finds himself in an unusual situation where he will be forced to reaffirm his title due to a glitch in the system and a scoring error.

“Shaka”.

Sport: surfing and snowboarding.

The story of how a professional snowboarder decided to conquer the most unpredictable wave in the world. Mathieu Crépel, 33, decided to step out of his comfort zone and embark on a long journey to test himself, push his limits and conquer a new peak. However, unlike thousands of other places he’s skied, this one doesn’t involve snow or rocks. The price of victory may be too high.

Mathieu has dedicated two years of his life to preparing for this adventure. Throughout that time, he trained constantly in the mountains and on the ocean, made several trips to Indonesia and Oregon. And finally made it to his destination: the Hawaiian island of Maui. In addition to its impressive athletic component, Shaka is a first and deeply personal story about the search for self.

“Depth Pecertion,” 2017.

Sport: snowboarding.

Filmed in an amazing natural area that is considered to be the most remote rainforest in the world, Depth Perception goes back to the roots of snowboarding and shows the connections between nature and riders. This movie will transport you to a mysterious tale and showcase the best backcountry skiing to be found on planet Earth.

Depth Perception is reminiscent of Wes Anderson’s films in style and is unlike any other snowboarding project. It looks deep into the essence of snowboarding and is ahead of its time. We get to see what led Travis, Austin, Robin and Brian to who they are today and learn how the spacey nature of British Columbia came to be and has evolved over the centuries.

“From the Bottom of the Peak” (2018).

Type of sport: alpine skiing.

A story about struggle and overcoming. The first full-length Russian sports drama “From the bottom of the peak” about a Paralympian, the plot of which is based on real events. Alexei Tsaryov, a young athlete from the junior alpine skiing team, overcomes pain, fear and uncertainty to realize his dream and become the best in the competition.

The prototype of the protagonist was a two-time Paralympic champion in cross-country skiing Alexei Moshkin. Alexei was personally present on the set, advised the actors and even played a cameo role.

Enjoy watching! Keep the shortlist and don’t forget to share your favorite extreme movies in the comments.
