How to move from one city to another, saving nerves and money?

According to HeadHunter research, compared to 2021, Russians have become more interested in moving from one city to another. Many are eager to gain interesting experience and find new opportunities. But it must be recognized that internal migration is not an easy task. A change of residence is always complicated: it is necessary not only to pack things correctly, but also to plan transportation costs even with a minimal budget. On how to properly prepare for the move, we tell you below.

Tip #1. Make a list of things you will take with you

Before moving, pay attention to the things that will go to the new home. To avoid spending too much on shipping unnecessary little things, be sure to check what you really need and what you don’t.

Do not try to move every piece of interior: it often happens that some boxes with things are not unpacked and then forever stored in the farthest corner. Assess the quality and condition of things: something may be defective. In this case, it does not make sense to take this cargo. By removing unnecessary, you will optimize costs and speed up the move.

Tip #2. Think about whether you will be transporting things yourself

Before moving, you need to calculate everything down to the last detail. Evaluate your strength and capabilities and lay down the exact time for transportation. Not everyone knows how to pack things properly, especially if they are too large or very fragile. There is a high risk of making a mistake when shipping on your own or with the help of someone you know. By overestimating your capabilities, you can inadvertently damage the cargo, and no one will compensate for the damage.

Therefore, having correctly prioritized, prepared a list of things and calculated the time, consider the option of contacting a transportation company, which is professionally engaged in cargo transportation. A reliable logistics operator will not only be able to deliver the cargo just in time, but also insure it, so that you do not worry about the safety of your belongings.

Tip #3. Match the volume of cargo with the method of transportation

So, you have decided how many things will leave with you. Now proceed to carefully analyze the ways of their delivery. Pay attention to prefabricated cargo, if you are transporting, for example, dishes, clothes or furniture in disassembled form. This option will be the most profitable. It involves transportation of small volume of goods from different senders in one car, thereby reducing the cost of the service for each client.

On the contrary, it is better to transport large items (kitchen sets, furniture and household appliances) in a separate vehicle. If you need to deliver the cargo quickly and with minimal time losses, consider air and express delivery. But this method will be much more expensive, and this should be taken into account when planning your budget.

Transportation rental rates should be chosen based on the distance and conditions in which you are moving. Hourly payment is suitable if you plan to move within one city, delivery to the destination takes no more than eight hours, and you do not know how many things to transport and how to pack them. The fixed option of renting transportation is more logical to choose when you have already assessed the volume of things and the move will take more than 8-10 hours.

Tip #4. Choose a reliable delivery service

When choosing a transportation company, it is important to pay attention to its reputation, as well as the geography of services. Especially if you plan to move to a remote populated area of Russia. Other advantages include: the operator’s experience in the market, providing guarantees of delivery time and cargo insurance options, as well as the presence of its own fleet of vehicles at the carrier.

In addition, getting acquainted with potential contractors, find out about the number and qualifications of their workers, options for prompt communication with the support service and the possibility of concluding a formal contract. It is also important to clarify how the cost of the tariffs offered to you by the company is calculated: for example, whether the final amount includes additional payments for floors, furniture assembly and other services.

Tip #5. Prepare your belongings for transportation

Plan your move at least 4-5 days in advance. First of all, prioritize what things you will definitely use right away, and what you will need only in the future. It’s a good idea to label the boxes, for example, “Dishes”, “Appliances”, “Clothes”. This information will help not only you, but also the movers who will transfer things to the car.

If you have decided on the option of prefabricated transportation, do the packing and labeling will be a contractor, taking into account all your wishes and features of the items. When self-transportation about all the nuances must be taken care of personally, and therefore, take into account that the possible move will take more time and effort.

Take special care when packing fragile items. They should be placed in boxes or bags, and the TV and dishes should be wrapped in bubble wrap (or soft cloth). Large furniture, such as a closet, is best disassembled for ease of transportation. And smaller furniture (like a sofa) can be left in its original form, pre-packing interior items with protective films.

Tip #6. Prepare sports luggage separately

When people change their place of residence, they often transport sports equipment (e.g. snowboards and skis). Due to its oversized dimensions, this luggage is comparable to fragile goods in terms of complexity of transportation, which means that it requires special attention and care in delivery.

The first and main question that all amateur and professional athletes ask is what is the best way to deliver the equipment.

Air transportation is an excellent option when things need to be transported in a short period of time, but it should be remembered that it is not cheap. Do not exclude from the list of possible difficulties and problems with the norms and rules of carrying sports luggage.

Railroad transportation can be more comfortable than air transportation, as the cargo will be in your sight. However, such transportation also has its inconveniences. First, you need to consider the time costs, secondly, there are limited luggage allowances, and thirdly, there is not enough space to accommodate the cargo.

If there is an opportunity to deliver things by private car, remember that this option is very convenient when moving within one city. If you need to deliver the cargo to another region, the time (there will be several trips in two directions) and financial costs (in terms of gasoline costs) will be high. In the case of sports equipment, the costs for owners of passenger cars increase due to the large area of the covers in which the equipment is packed.

Therefore, if the move involves traveling long distances, it is most efficient to use the services of a transportation company. A logistics operator will help you save both time and money.

Packing equipment – the second, no less significant nuance of transportation. Surfboards, skis and kiting equipment can be preserved with special protective covers, which, however, are also necessary for transportation of any other sports equipment. For better safety, cover the case with clothing and secure it with straps and ties to make the cargo safer. To keep your bike during transportation will help plastic case, which as well as bags with a hard bottom, it is best to buy before moving, if the budget allows.

Tip #7. Prepare for the arrival of specialists

To avoid traffic jams and extra time, plan your move on weekdays and outside of rush hour. Make sure that the place where the transportation that will pick up your belongings will arrive is free in advance. For example, you can park your personal vehicle in the driveway as close to the front of the house as possible. By doing so, you will occupy and prepare it for yourself or the professionals who will take care of the transportation of things.

Also make sure that the movers’ work is not interfered with: check the entrance to the entrance, check the number of floors, and make sure that the elevator works. Check whether the services of movers are included in the price of delivery, otherwise you will have to deal with the descent and lifting of heavy boxes yourself.

Stay in touch with the delivery service and when the company’s car arrives at your house, don’t delay. If you realize you’re running late, give the driver advance notice so you don’t have to pay for downtime.

A clear strategy and precise tactics will help you plan your move. Objectively assess your capabilities and strengths and do not be afraid to ask for help from friends, acquaintances and reliable professionals.
