“I have a scar the size of a pizza”: the crazy adventures of Bear Grylls

Bear Grylls can rightfully be considered the most famous extreme traveler in the world. But, as you know, any extreme travel almost always entails injuries. Today we tell you about the battle scars of the British TV presenter and writer.

1. Ice shoulder

This happened in Antarctica in 2008. Behar was on skis and a kite was pulling him along the ice. Suddenly, a strong gust of wind dragged the traveler and tossed him upward. He flew up into the air and on landing broke his shoulder. Given the conditions Bear Grylls was in, he had to live for days waiting for rescuers in a tent with a dwindling supply of paracetamol. To this day, his shoulder still reminds him of those Antarctic vacations.

2. Packed back

Few people know, but Behar served in the army in Africa. One day while on leave, Grylls wanted to do a routine parachute jump. When it was time to jump, the plane was at 14,000 feet (about 4,300 meters). Behar’s parachute dome did not open properly, causing him to fall at a very high rate of speed. The fall was cushioned only by a backpack with a reserve parachute behind his back, on which Grylls fell.

The traveler vaguely remembers being taken to the hospital. There, a doctor stuck a huge needle in his back.It turned out that the young man had three broken vertebrae. At one point, Grylls was in a lot of pain. But he focused his recovery on a specific goal: climbing Everest. 18 months later, the summit was conquered.

3. Chest pizza

Interestingly, the extreme climber has an unglamorous-looking scar on his chest. Who sees it, always wondering where it came from. There are different assumptions: maybe he tried to wrestle a crocodile or something like that. Bear Grylls earned it five years ago, when he was hastily trying to pull a pizza out of the oven and left a kind of branding.

4. Lungs and Everest

Right after Grylls returned from Everest, he and his friends decided to go sailing. They spent a lot of time freediving. Naturally, everyone tried to dive as deep as possible. A little later, when Bear Grylls returned to Britain, he noticed that he began to cough up blood. No one understood why. A doctor later explained to the extreme traveler that it was the result of a dramatic change in altitude, from Everest to the depths. Behar spent Christmas in the hospital.

5. Karate nose

Here, too, the traveler distinguished himself. Contrary to stereotypes, he broke his nose only once in his life. The case was at karate classes, when he passed the exam for a black belt. At the time, Bear was about 16 years old. He won the bout, but his nose has been slightly crooked to the left side ever since.

6. The camera and the leg

Ironically, Grylls managed to get injured even on the set of the TV series Survival at Any Cost. In the Canadian Rockies, the camera and the entire metal structure holding it flew down the mountain, right on the head of the actor, who had just stopped at its base. The equipment flew a millimeter from Grylls’ forehead and landed on his left leg. On the leg appeared bruises the size of two footballs, and our long-suffering hero needed evacuation by helicopter. But if the camera had fallen on Bear’s head, it would have nailed him for sure. It was the most dangerous and near-death experience of the famous traveler’s career.

7. Scorpion shank

Well, and by classic – all extreme travelers are bitten by scorpions. It happened in the Sahara with the French Foreign Legion in 2004. “Since then, this sting has been transformed into a horrifying blackened scar that looks like someone put feed beans under the skin – shared in one of his interviews Bear Grylls. – But the kids really like to touch that scar.
