If you wake up early in your sleep, you can become more creative. That’s what scientists from France think

Even a minute's sleep boosts creativity

Artist Salvador Dali and inventor Thomas Edison used this method.

How useful is a short sleep? How does it affect the work of the brain?

We understand together with a neurologist.

Scientists have checked the lifehack used by inventor Thomas Edison and artist Salvador Dali. Both liked to take a nap in the middle of the day holding a heavy object in their hand. When the object fell, they woke up and began to create with renewed vigor. It’s believed that in this state you can maximize your creative potential. Does this apply to ordinary life?

Elena Kylina

neurologist, epileptologist, reflexologist.

A one-minute nap can really help to “digest” the information received, but on the condition of a full night’s sleep.

The test subjects fell asleep for 20 minutes – in a dark room and with a mug in their hands, which then fell and woke them up. In this condition, the participants had to solve new tasks. It turned out that 83% of volunteers whose sleep was interrupted were able to find a solution. And those who did not fall asleep, the probability of finding the answer was only 30%. As a result, the scientists concluded that there is a certain “creative zone”, which can be reached by waking up in the early stages of sleep. What exactly is the mechanism that enhances creativity, the authors of the work do not yet know exactly.

Neurologist’s opinion

Normally, we need at least 6-8 hours of sleep per night. Physiologically, we are accustomed to lie down at sunset and get up at dawn – this is the basis of the doctrine of circadian rhythms, which set the pace of all vital processes in the body. It takes time.

Elena: A complete sleep cycle consists of falling asleep, shallow, deep and REM sleep.

Most of the cells we need, including immune cells, are formed in the deep sleep, slow-wave stage. That is why you need enough time to accumulate strength and replenish energy.
