People who want to get rid of excess weight, often make a choice in favor of running. This type of activity pays off with simplicity, accessibility and effectiveness, but to achieve a noticeable result, it is important to take into account several nuances. One of the main ones is the duration of jogging.

How much should you run to lose weight?

This question arises in everyone who decided to fight with extra pounds with the help of running training. It is believed that the active fat-burning process begins 30-40 minutes after running with low intensity, in the aerobic pulse zone. Before that, the body gets energy thanks to the burning of carbohydrates, specifically glycogen, which is found in large quantities in the liver and muscles. Thus, for an effective fight against excess weight, the duration of training should be at least 50 minutes, and better an hour.

At least, this was believed to be the case before the publication of research by a group of American scientists. The results of their work can fundamentally change the view of weight loss with the help of running training and attract those who are frightened by hour-long cross-country runs.

Is it really possible to lose weight in even 10 minutes of running a day?

Colossal changes in a short workout

The study of the current issue was taken up at Stanford University School of Medicine. A group of scientists led by Michael Snyder, head of the Department of Genetics, conducted a detailed study on how each molecule in the body reacts to physical exercise.

The experiment involved 36 volunteers between the ages of 40 and 75, including Snyder himself. The study participants ranged in condition from fit to overweight. Doctors took blood from the volunteers before a 10-minute workout on a treadmill, immediately after the exercise, as well as after 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes.

Scientists managed to monitor the parameters of 17,662 different molecules in the subjects’ bodies. It turned out that 9815 molecules, that is, more than half, changed during the 10-minute training. Some of them returned to their previous state after a few minutes, and some of them kept changing even after an hour on the track. Transformations of parameters were recorded in molecules responsible for body nutrition, metabolism, immunity, tissue repair and appetite.

Is 10 minutes of running enough for weight loss?

The results of the study suggest that even brief physical activity has a great impact on various processes in the body, including metabolism and fat burning.

The scientists intend to expand their work to more precisely establish exactly how each group of molecules responds to exercise. And the ultimate goal of Snyder’s group is to create a method for determining a person’s fitness by analyzing blood.

Despite the wide resonance, the results of the research of scientists from Standford do not refute the well-known formula for weight loss with running. To get rid of extra pounds, it is necessary to combine long jogging at low intensity with proper nutrition and healthy sleep.

However, you can start with short distances, because even a little physical activity has an amazing effect on the body. And thanks to American researchers, this intuitive truth has been scientifically substantiated.
