Russian surfing movie “On the Wave”: what can the ocean teach you?

Two important victories in one movie. A world champion who has to prove his victory and a newcomer who tries to make friends with the wave.

In February of this year, a Russian surfing movie, On the Wave, was released . After watching it, I immediately wanted to throw everything to hell, pack a suitcase and go to conquer the stormy spot, as the heroine of the movie did. But if you, like me, only dream about vacation, you can always get into the atmosphere of sunny Bali, noisy waves and scorching sun by watching the movie “On the Wave”.

The movie is based on two unrelated stories: American Kelly Slater and Russian Maria, and the stories of the people they meet.

Kelly is a professional surfer, he has won the world championship 10 times, and everything was going to be right for him to win the world championship for the 11th time. But just as he was standing on the podium with the trophy in his hands, there was a glitch in the scoring system, so he needed to confirm his title.

Slater is a very famous figure in the world of surfing, at the age of 20 he became the youngest world champion and at 39 he became the oldest, this is the period of his life shown in the movie. Kelly also holds another record – in 2005, he made two 10-point passes and earned the maximum number of points in a single attempt. In addition to surfing, Kelly has starred in a large number of movies, music videos and even created his own music band.

Maria is someone who has never stood on a board and is only familiar with surfing from movies, but really wants to learn. So she flies to Bali to make her dream come true. The people they meet have in one way or another connected their lives with surfing: for some it is a source of inspiration, for others invaluable knowledge that they want to pass on to others.

Learning to surf is hard for Masha, she doesn’t succeed for a long time, but at one point she changes herself and changes her approach to learning and starts to make progress. In the course of training she realizes that the ocean is not her rival, that it is not necessary to try to conquer the elements, it is necessary, as the heroine says, “to make friends with the wave”. She comes to realize that there are things that cannot be bought, and that it is impossible to become a good surfer at the snap of a finger, even those people who have been conquering waves for several years consider themselves beginners.

At the end of the movie both characters get their important victories, Kelly becomes an 11-time world champion and Maria manages to catch her first wave.
