Even a gloomy time will give bright impressions if you spend it in the right place.

“Experienced tourists will confirm: nature has no bad weather. And the very concept of “off-season” should have been abolished long ago. Even a gloomy late fall can give bright impressions, if you spend it in the right place. Where exactly, I will tell you below.

Kaliningrad region

Despite its proximity to the cold Baltic Sea, in autumn the Kaliningrad region is much warmer than “on the mainland” (thanks to the Gulf Stream!). Already boarding at Khrabrovo, you feel that the trip will be cozy and warm: the scallops of waves rushing to the autumn-red Curonian Spit hint at it. And when you get acquainted with the region more closely, you get imbued with medieval brick Gothic and Hoffman’s “fairy-tale” heritage, start to feel the almond-pink aroma of marzipan dissolved in the air and gradually get used to the penetrating wind on the coast. The off-season in Kaliningrad is definitely amber, not only in the artistic sense, but also literally: the probability that a Baltic storm will bring pieces of the most autumnal stone ashore increases every day.

Dagestan

Dagestan has been experiencing a real tourist renaissance in recent years, so enjoying its beauty, cuisine and sights without rushing and practically alone is a great fortune, available only in the fall. October fogs fill the already atmospheric ghost villages of Kahib, Ghor and Gamsutl with a very special suspense. In the Sulak Canyon you can spend hours watching powerful eagles soaring in the streams of air against the background of the mountains. And after being inspired by the epic nature of the region, you can get to know it from another side – warm and homely, staying overnight in a hospitable high-mountain village and tasting with appetite the local cuisine – khinkal, chuda and urbech. And lastly to look to the sea, to Derbent, which is not without reason considered to be the most ancient city in Russia.

Vladimir and Suzdal

Toy Suzdal and its “big brother” Vladimir are included in the Golden Ring of Russia – and quite deservedly so. The cities impress with their ancient temple architecture, an iconic illustration of which are the Golden Gate and the Holy Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir, where frescoes by Andrei Rublev and Daniil Cherny have been preserved. Against the background of monumental Vladimir cathedrals local “everyday” museums – spoons, gingerbread, blacksmithing – seem a bit frivolous, but nevertheless they also deserve attention. Well, Suzdal is worth going to for outdoor recreation and inspiration: the bell tower of the Rizopolozhensky Monastery offers impressive views of the ancient Russian city.

Iturup Island, Sakhalin Region

The Kuril Islands are an absolutely unique phenomenon on the tourist map of Russia. The local climate most of all resembles the monsoon climate of neighboring Japan, and therefore is characterized by a rare for the mainland mildness and a large number of sunny days. Abrupt change of weather is only good for the island, then illuminating the white rocks of the bay Prostor, then adding “gloominess” to the volcanic beaches with titanium-magnetite sand and hiding in the dense fog kekury Bird Cape. A separate Kuril pleasure – after a tiring but impressive trip to immerse in local thermae, which seem to cure everything in the world – and the soul, among others.

Tula and Yasnaya Polyana

Those who feel the seasonal need for creativity and art in the fall should definitely stop by Tula for at least a couple of days. For the classics here are Tolstoy’s Yasnaya Polyana, where the spirit of writing can be felt almost physically, the Tula Kremlin and the Arms Museum. And for the new young art – numerous art clusters led by “Iskra” and “Octave”. And just strolling along the beautiful new embankment near the walls of the Kremlin and listening to street musicians, who are not at all frightened by the weather, is quite an interesting scenario for those who want to take a little breather and get into the atmosphere of an old county town.
