One of the books I read recently described a curious experiment. In response to students talking about new technologies of the XXI century that could change the future, the professor asked those who knew their blood type to raise their hands. The hands of exactly half the audience reached up. Not bad. But the lecturer asked another question: “And who knows their zodiac sign?”. Not surprisingly, everyone in the audience reacted positively. Is there any point in talking about scientific and technological progress? And after all, knowing your blood type can not only save your life in emergencies, but also help to adjust nutrition, choose the right type of exercise and even learn the characteristics of temperament.

What is a blood group?

This concept appeared in the early twentieth century thanks to the studies of Karl Landsteiner. As a result, they revealed the presence of certain protein substances (group antigens) in the plasma and membrane of red blood cells. The researcher found that when healthy blood was transfused into tubes with the blood of patients, clots formed in some of them. That is, there are compatible and incompatible types of blood. According to this principle, the scientist divided people into three groups, and later his Czech colleague Jansky added a fourth. Landsteiner received the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for his discovery.

What are the different blood types?

As a result of all this research, four groups have been identified:

  • Thefirst (zero – 0) – is a universal donor for all other groups, but can only accept blood from group 1.
  • The second (A) – can be a donor for groups 2 and 4, but can only accept blood from groups 2 and 1.
  • Third (B) – is a donor for 3 and 4, can accept blood from 3 and 1.
  • Fourth (AB) – can accept any blood type, but can be a donor exclusively for 4.

How does blood type affect character?

It is believed that one or another blood group of a person affects his temperament in different ways. For example, the owners of the first group are considered the most emotional, purposeful and optimistic. Those who got the second blood type – creative and sensitive natures. At the same time, they are not always easy to get acquainted with people, are subject to stress and often hold back emotions, which is not always favorable for their health. People with the third blood group are quite sociable and energetic, but prone to mood swings, with the fourth – good organizers.

How to choose a workout by blood type?

Based on some features of the character and organism of people with the first blood group, aerobic exercise, swimming, dancing and gymnastics are ideal for them. If you are a beginner, try to gradually move from a light load to a more complex one.

It is believed that those with type 2 blood will do best in yoga, running, martial arts and dancing. You have a high need for physical activity, so you can safely train daily, but not too intense. Also pay attention to team sports.

Athletes with the third blood type usually prefer individual training. You have well-developed endurance, but try not to overexert yourself. Alternate between strength and aerobic exercises, yoga and running.

For owners of the fourth blood group are suitable for any type of training, here it is worth focusing only on individual preferences. The slowest will like low-intensity exercises like yoga and Pilates.

How to choose nutrition by blood group?

For the first time people started talking about the blood group diet in the early 00s, when American doctor James D’Adamo published his book “Nutrition according to blood groups”. The author of the idea believes that the type of food could affect the digestive and immune systems, which led to a change in the group, depending on the change of diet.

So D’Adamo says that the oldest blood group O (I) was in Cro-Magnon, who were hunting. Accordingly, its carriers should eat a lot of animal protein (meat, fish, poultry). They need to limit the amount of carbohydrates, cereals and legumes.

Gradually, as people began to farm and eat plant food, there was blood group A (II). To its carriers, the author respectively recommends plant foods: vegetables, fruits, legumes, cereals without gluten. Exclude dairy products, meat, coffee and alcohol.

Group B (III) originated from the dairy diet of nomads migrating from the Middle East and North Africa to the Himalayas. You can eat fruits and vegetables, dairy, most meats except chicken. Exclude wheat, corn, legumes, tomatoes and some other foods.

Blood group AB (IV) is the result of a mixture of Caucasian (group A) and Asian (group B) gene pools. Its carriers were born relatively recently – 15 centuries ago. It is assumed that the formation occurred as a result of mixing of groups II and III. This means that people with blood group IV is suitable for both plant and animal food. Beans, corn, beef, alcohol should be excluded.

Is there any sense in such a diet?

Let’s turn to the data published in 2014 of a large meta-analysis of the results of 1455 studies investigating its effectiveness. Dr. Ahmed El-Sohemi, Associate Professor of Nutrigenomics Research and head of the research team reported that they found no reliable data on the effect of the blood group diet on weight loss.

Each of us is an amazing mechanism whose operation depends on a huge number of factors. Yes, you can be a type B (III) but still have lactase deficiency, in which cow’s milk-based products are off-limits. If you want to lose weight, are concerned about having obesity in a close relative and want to avoid it, the best and most effective way is to get tested and discuss your findings with an endocrinologist and nutritionist. Such a regimen can sort out nutritional issues and tailor an individualized diet.
