Everything under control: how self-control prolongs life

According to a study by scientists from the University of Michigan, people who have developed a strong discipline and self-control, live much longer, slower aging, as well as have the ability to better cope with problems.

Co-author Leah Richmond-Rakerd says that self-control can be developed by anyone, just like building muscle mass. That is, it is not an innate ability.

How do you develop self-control?

Self-control is a skill like any other. And with regular practice, it can be developed. However, it should be understood that there will be no instant miracle result. It will take persistence, hard work and willpower.

Get out of your comfort zone
If some action makes you uncomfortable, but you realize that in the long run it will be beneficial, keep doing it. It’s always difficult at first, but people get used to everything – it can become a habit.

Establish a daily regimen
Try to clearly follow the chosen schedule. Discipline is the main guarantee of self-control.

Regularly engage in sports
Sports can train not only the body, but also the spirit, and helps you become more resilient and stress-resistant.

Start reading
Make it a habit to read at least one chapter or, for example, 10 pages every day. On the subway, before bed, whenever, wherever and however much you want. The main thing is to read. By doing something on a regular basis, you can increase your self-control.

Meditate
Meditation helps you become more aware, calm and less anxious. Through it, you can free yourself from negative emotions and clear your mind.

Most importantly, remember, you are capable of taking control of your emotions and experiences. Only you decide whether this or that event will upset you or not. Therefore, try to direct your energy in the right direction and do not worry about nothing.
