How can ice cubes be dangerous for the face?

Why shouldn't you use ice cubes for your face?

This was the favorite procedure of Marilyn Monroe and Marlene Dietrich, but cosmetologists treat it ambiguously.

Today, the practice of “ice wash” is rapidly gaining popularity. On the Internet you can find many recipes for cosmetic ice cubes with different effects. But are they really safe? Together with Arina Kireeva, cosmetologist and dermatologist of the GMT Clinic, we discuss how the procedure works and what contraindications should be kept in mind.

Why can ice cubes harm the face?

Ice has a cold effect. First of all, it affects blood vessels: they narrow, due to which the shock effect of lymph drainage occurs. And this can lead to excess swelling, flabby skin and its unhealthy color.

Such regular procedures contribute to the spasm of blood vessels, which leads to impaired nutrition of the epidermis. Ice “dries” the skin, which can cause flaking and red spots on the face.

Owners of dry and normal skin is better to refrain from frequent washing with ice cubes. Blocking of sweat and sebaceous glands after a temperature change will lead to loss of skin elasticity.

Who should not use ice cubes?

This type of home care is not suitable for everyone. For the skin it is a damaging factor, especially for sensitive skin, when the lipid barrier is broken. A sudden change in temperature has a “cold burn”. This is a strong stress, especially for the skin around the eyes. Also turn to such a procedure should not be those who are struggling with acne and other inflammations. Ice can only aggravate the situation.

Cold causes the outflow of lymph. Vessels are narrowed, but small ones can simply burst, which leads to couperose – this is a pathological condition of the vascular mesh. Blood vessels show through the skin and have the appearance of “stars” or “spider webs”.

How to get rid of puffiness without ice cubes?

It is best to use patches and do a light lymphatic drainage massage. Lifehack: cold enhances the effect of patches, so before using them you can put them in the refrigerator.

During the massage there is a local activation of lymphatic currents, metabolism is accelerated, and toxins are removed from the skin cells. The procedure returns freshness, even tone and elasticity to the skin. Thanks to the combination of pressing and vibrating massage movements, excess fluid is quickly removed from the intercellular space, so swelling in the treated areas disappears quite quickly.
