7 things at home that are a health hazard. You should throw them out

What household items can jeopardize health?

Let’s find out together with an expert.

Perhaps everyone strives to create maximum coziness and comfort in the house. But did you know that familiar and seemingly useful things in the house can be harmful to health? We tell you what has no place in your household and why you should give it up.

Nata Gonchar

Food containers, toothbrushes and even toilet paper can cause allergies and serious illness.

Air freshener

Air fresheners contain phthalates, toxic esters that accumulate in the liver and kidneys and negatively affect hormone function and reproductive development. Particularly strong negative impact of volatile substances is felt by pregnant women and children: from the smell of the aerosol experience headaches, diarrhea and signs of depression.

What to replace it with?

Nata: I recommend replacing artificial fresheners with scented candles or lamps with natural essential oils. They not only fill the house with fragrance, but also have a positive effect on the body. For example, essential oils of orange, grapefruit, lime, lemon and tangerine will cheer up your household.

Plastic containers

These are probably found in every home. They are a convenient and affordable way to store food, but many of them are made of low quality material. The clear plastic contains polycarbonate based on a highly toxic substance that foods absorb. In addition, plastic has phthalates (toxic esters) that disrupt the endocrine system. This can lead to high blood pressure and insulin resistance in teens.

What to replace it with?

Nat: Try to replace plastic containers with glass, iron or ceramic lunchboxes, containers, jars with lids. Or choose polyethylene or polypropylene containers- pay attention to the safety labels #2, 4, and 5. The main thing – never heat food in a plastic container in the microwave, so that the high temperature does not provoke the release of harmful chemical compounds from the plastic, which will penetrate into the contents of the container, and then – into the body.

Antibacterial soap

Such does not kill even 1% of bacteria, but disrupts the microflora of the skin of the hands. Such pseudo-protection can provoke a hormonal failure and weaken the immune system. Negative impact is caused by triclosan, which is included in the composition of soap. The substance gives an irritating effect, destroys the skin microflora, causes problems with the endocrine system.

What to replace it with?

To protect yourself, choose in favor of natural soap on an alkaline basis with the addition of essential and vegetable oils, therapeutic clay, minerals and herbs.

Bath mats

Water and other moisture, getting on the surface of the mat, creates favorable conditions for the reproduction of pathogenic microflora, fungus and mold. Mold provokes allergies, the signs of which are similar to seasonal allergies: nasal congestion, runny nose, itchy nose, sneezing, burning eyes and lacrimation.

Fungus can cause a number of diseases:

  • bronchial asthma;
  • skin rashes;
  • pneumonia;
  • gastrointestinal disorders and some others.

What can I replace it with?

Nata: If you can not give up mats, but want to protect the health of the household, follow two rules. Before leaving the bathroom, try to dry your body and especially your feet as much as possible. Wash your mat 2-3 times a month. These tips will help keep your mats clean and safe.

Nat: An alternative to conditioner would be lemon or orange oil. Add a few drops each time you put laundry in the machine to give it a delicate scent and softness. Oils also have deodorizing, antimicrobial and antifungal properties.

Scented toilet paper

Toilet paper scented with lemon, rose, peach, lilac and other scents contains phthalates, formaldehyde, fragrances and dyes. These chemicals can cause irritation and itching if they come in contact with the skin. White toilet paper can also be hazardous to your health. Some manufacturers bleach the paper with chlorine, which releases dangerous toxins.

What can I replace it with?

Nata: Choose paper without dyes and fragrances, without overpaying for expensive brands that are much more likely to have formaldehyde. The best choice is unrecycled, odorless toilet paper that has been bleached with oxygen or ozone (or hydrogen). It is labeled TCF, which means it is chlorine-free.
