“Stunningly beautiful, delicious, close and unlike any other country – in order to “package” Georgia in worthy complementary formulations, you will have to try hard. I propose to get to know Sakartvelo (as locals call their country) a little closer and walk around its most famous, but by no means the only noteworthy locations”.

Tbilisi

Trying to get to know Tbilisi from the inside, it’s easy to stay in this city for a couple of months. Therefore, the necessary tourist minimum usually includes only a small part of the capital’s sights: Narikala Fortress, Rezo Gabriadze’s marionette theater, Tiflis baths sung by Pushkin, Tsminda Sameba Cathedral, flea market near the Dry Bridge, Freedom Square and Rustaveli Avenue.

If time permits, it is worth allocating a few hours to Sololaki – a colorful district of “old Georgia” with recognizable carved balconies, details of “Caucasian Art Nouveau”, endless staircases and garlands of clean linen stretched right between the houses. And finish your walk around the city with a sunset on Mtatsminda and a gastro-dinner in one of the endless restaurants of local cuisine.

Gudauri and the Georgian Military Road

You can’t travel around Georgia and not once take the Georgian Military Road. This very picturesque but rather dangerous highway stretches across the Main Caucasus Ridge, “stringing” on itself a scattering of authentic villages and magnificent panoramas. It is worth making at least three stops: at the Arch of Friendship of the Peoples of Russia and Georgia, which offers an impressive view of the surrounding mountains, at the resort of Gudauri and in the village of Pasanauri, which is considered the birthplace of khinkali and where the Black and White Aragvi merge. Further on the road – Ananuri fortress and azure Zhinvali reservoir, where those who are tired of the change of impressions should stop.

Batumi

Combining the charm of a seaside southern city with the infrastructure of a modern resort, Batumi is ideal for a combined trip in the format “urban tourism + beach”. The pearl of “Adjara Singapore” for more than 100 years remains the botanical garden, where the most prominent Georgian and then Soviet figures of science and culture inhaled the aromas of pine needles, eucalyptus and roses. The garden is joined by the avant-garde sculpture “Ali and Nino”, whose love story can be overheard on the central embankment.

Kazbek and Stepantsminda

It is better to arrive to the five-thousand-meter peak Kazbek early in the morning: already at noon its peak is lost in a dense haze of clouds. Mighty mountain slopes serve as a spectacular natural backdrop for the ancient Church of the Holy Trinity in Gergeti – the highest mountain building in Europe. The stone church is literally above the clouds, at an altitude of over 2 thousand meters, which makes it seem as if it is floating in the air.

A long walk in the Truso Valley, between 60 mineral springs and waterfalls of the Terek River, will help you get back to earth. Truso valley is one of the most secluded places in the whole Georgia, and therefore it is very suitable to be alone with your thoughts and take a little breather between noisy feasts.

Vardzia

In ancient times Vardzia was a huge cave city, safely hidden from prying eyes. But a strong earthquake in 1283 actually “chipped off” a huge piece of it, revealing the monastery and the city. Now Vardzia is eight rocky floors and 550 caves connected by corridors. It takes 3-4 hours to walk around them, but it takes much longer to get there. The road to get here from Tbilisi or Batumi is a whole adventure with dashing turns on the serpentine, unpaved roads and long stops for photos. But Vardzia is definitely worth it!
