World records for basic exercises

Not sure it’s even realistic to repeat such results.

Faster, higher, stronger – the words that best describe the desire of athletes to set world records. To repeat these achievements an ordinary person will not be able to, but some athletes see only the goal, and no obstacles do not prevent them. We have compiled a selection of the most impressive world records in seemingly basic exercises.

Push-ups

The record holder for the number of push-ups in one approach among adults is Japanese Minoru Yoshida. In 1980, he did 10,507 push-ups without a break. As for children’s achievements, the record belongs to Ibragim Lyanov. In 2019, the boy from the Ingush village of Novy Redan did 4,445 push-ups in one approach when he was 6 years old. Ibragim and his coach have already stated their desire to break the world record.

If you are interested in unusual records, you will be surprised by the achievement of Chinese Chi Guijong. On December 8, 2011 he did 41 push-ups on one index finger in 30 seconds!

Pull-ups on a bar

The average man is capable of doing between 10-15 pull-ups. But the world records for this exercise are truly amazing. American Jason Petzold in 2011 set a record for pull-ups in one minute – 60 times. As for women’s achievements, during the same period of time Elicia Weber pulled up 37 times.

The world record for pull-ups in 12 hours belongs to Russian Nikolai Kaklimov. In 2016, the resident of Krasnoyarsk pulled up 5825 times and broke the record of Czech athlete Andrew Shapiro, who had previously pulled up 5742 times.

Bench press

American powerlifter Ryan Kennelly is the world record holder in the bench press. His achievement seems unbelievable: in 2008, in a multilayer outfit, the athlete pressed a barbell weighing 486 kg, while his own weight was 140 kg. The world record for unequipped bench press was set by American powerlifter Julius Maddox – 349 kilograms.

In March 2020, Rahman Siamand, a Paralympian from Iran, died. He holds the world record in bench press among Paralympians – 310 kilograms.

Bench press

You may know Hafthor Björnsson from the TV series Game of Thrones, where he played the role of The Mountain. But the Icelander is not only and not so much an actor, but also an athlete who has repeatedly won the “Strongest Man on the Planet” competition. He also holds the world record for the deadlift. Using special straps and overalls, Hafthor Björnsson lifted a barbell weighing 501 kilograms.

The unequipped deadlift record holder is also a native of Iceland. Benedikt Magnusson’s achievement is an impressive 460 kilograms.

Standing barbell bench press

In 1972, Soviet athlete Vasily Alekseev set a world record for the standing barbell bench press – 236.5 kilograms. Since then, no one has been able to repeat this achievement. Even modern athletes, whose level of training is higher, cannot beat Alexeev’s record.

Perhaps this is due to the fact that this bench press was excluded from the competition program because of the difficulty in assessing the correctness of the exercise.
