How to meditate correctly: instructions for beginners

Often we come across the stereotype that meditation is an activity exclusively for yogis and people who want to learn the hidden meanings of the universe. In fact, such practices are invisibly present in our everyday life. After all, we always want to relax and get rid of burdensome thoughts after work, training or a fun holiday. But to maximize the effect, you need to familiarize yourself with the techniques and take the time to practice. We talked to Daria Smi, writer, meditation practitioner and author of the course “Freedom Inside”, about how to relax, free yourself from thoughts and how it is useful.

What is meditation?

In a deep sense, meditation is a tool of the spiritual teachings of Buddhism, which helps to clear the mind and learn to control it. It allows you to achieve an inner state of calmness of mind and body with full awareness and mindfulness. There are different meditative practices. Some are aimed at relaxation and non-judgmental observation of the present moment of being. Others have a definite object in the form of thoughts and sensations and are often combined with visualization. The purpose of these meditations is to manage not only the mind, but also our inner energy.

What are the benefits of meditation?

Looking at meditation from a more down-to-earth perspective, for those who lead active lifestyles, the practice can be a resource for physical and emotional recovery. This happens by deeply relaxing muscles and achieving peace of mind and feelings. In addition, meditation can improve mindfulness and focus during training and competition. Which, of course, will have a positive effect on your results.

Those who regularly practice meditation, significantly expand consciousness and the boundaries of perception of reality. Simply put, people live life brighter, feel happiness more strongly and much more often, because they are able to see it in ordinary things. Classes give an opportunity to accept and let go of negative emotions and feelings, remaining in harmony. Such exercises teach mindfulness.

The phrase “letting go of thoughts” sounds quite simple, but it is a very complex skill that is acquired with experience. The main thing is to remember that in the first times, different fantasies and memories will constantly come into your head, distracting you from the relaxation process. This is absolutely normal. Just each time gently switch your attention to breathing, do not scold yourself for inability to concentrate and do not think that you are doing something badly. That’s the way it should be: the brain can’t be empty, it’s hardwired for constant reflection. In time, you will be able to be in a state of calm regardless of the thoughts coming and going.

At what time of day it is better to meditate, choose according to personal feelings. Someone prefers morning practices to get a charge of energy and awareness. Someone likes to practice in the evenings, after a hard day’s work to relax and cleanse themselves of unnecessary information.

Despite the large number of techniques, remember that meditation is, first of all, personal comfort, relaxation and harmony. Listen to your body and enjoy it.
