How to properly store skis and snowboards in the summer in an apartment

How to properly store winter gear in summer?

Snowboarding and alpine skiing instructors answer.

The cold season is officially over, and we are looking forward to six months of warmth and sunshine. Of course, “oases” with snow still remain in Russia, and some people have the opportunity to use them for skiing. But these are more exceptions to the rules.

Winter equipment for the mountains should be saved until the next season, and so that it does not turn into a pumpkin. Let’s see how to do it correctly.

The main rule

After the final day of skiing in the mountains do not hurry to carry your equipment home, put it in a case and throw it on the balcony. First of all, get rid of the dirt and snow, if it is still present. Leave your gear in the hallway to dry well. Boards and skis should take room temperature, then they can be put away in a dry cover and put behind the closet. With this arrangement, the equipment will stay “in condition” for a long time, and preparation before the next season will be minimal.

This approach to storage works if you keep a good eye on the equipment, constantly maintain it and repair defects. Otherwise, you’ll have to go to the service first and only then put your skis or snowboard in the case.

It is not difficult to care for and store a snowboard.

Before you put your board into “stop snow” mode, in other words, send it for storage, you should take it to a service. There it will be waxed (the sliding coating will be restored, edges will be sharpened and the wax will be renewed) and repaired if necessary.

The board should not stand, it is better to be in a horizontal position. You can buy special bindings for this, like the ones you may have seen in ski equipment storage rooms. Or put it on a cabinet. The bindings do not need to be removed.

Do not store your equipment near the battery or on the balcony. It is necessary to avoid strong temperature fluctuations. Boards although made by advanced technologies with the use of innovative glue, oils and resins, it does not save them from losing their properties under the influence of heat.

As for snowboard boots, it’s even simpler. After skiing, leave your boots to dry for a couple of days: you can use an antibacterial shoe dryer, it will be both faster and healthier. Then wipe off the dirt and put them in a closet where you have plenty of other shoes. Inside the boots themselves, you can put bags of silicone inside to collect moisture.

Since snowboarding and alpine skiing have quite a lot in common, the rules for storing boards and skis in the summer season are the same.

In the off-season it is best to store ski equipment (skis, poles and boots) in a dark, dry and ventilated room, having prepared them for storage beforehand.

Firstly, there should be a restriction from direct sunlight and high humidity. This is necessary so that the edges do not rust and the sliding surface does not deform or flake off. Secondly, all equipment should be stored in a case and be fixed either in a vertical or horizontal position. Skis fall, and quite often. Remember that.

Boots should be well dried, bindings should not be tightened, so as not to damage them during storage. At the same time, check that everything is working properly. Usually boots are also stored in covers or special cases, but this is more relevant to specialized centers and sports schools.

There’s really nothing complicated. If you look closely, everything is quite simple and logical, and often you can draw an analogy with the storage of ordinary household items.
