8 sports brand names that have hidden meanings

We come across brands everywhere and don’t always think about what the familiar names mean. So what’s behind the names of the world’s most popular sports brands?

Reebok

Originally a sportswear and accessories company founded by Joseph William Foster in 1895, the name of the company was J. ‘W. Foster & Co. It was later renamed several times due to difficult pronunciation and in 1958 acquired the name it still bears today.

The grandchildren of the founders chose a name for the brand derived from the word “rhebok”, which means “antelope” in African language.

Generation Gap

This is the name of the American brand Gap. The name Generation Gap was translated as “generation gap” or “father-child conflict”. Later the name was shortened to Gap for ease of spelling and promotion.

This name characterizes the history of the brand – the company produces not just ordinary everyday shirts and jeans, but a real lifestyle and state of mind for hippies and American youth. The word gap itself can be translated from English as “gap” or “gap”.

adidas

There are no questions about the name adidas – it is derived from the surname of the founders, but there is another subtlety: in the United States, the name of the brand is pronounced with an accent on the second syllable, and the accent on the first syllable, characteristic of Germany and accepted everywhere, is explained simply: the founder’s name was Adolf (Adi) Dassler.

Although you may hear an alternative version of the origin of the brand name: the name adidas is an acronym formed from the phrase All Day I Dream About Soccer. But it isn’t.
