Hear yourself: where to start meditating and why do it?

In a world full of stress and anxiety, sometimes you want to find an island of peace and quiet. Not everyone manages to find a balance between work and personal life, and in the pursuit of productivity, you can lose yourself. Lack of time also plays against us: it is not often possible to spend more than ten minutes alone with yourself, and even those during a shower. According to Maria Shumakova, a famous movie actress, meditation will help to overcome these difficulties.

For me, mindfulness is the ability to choose my reaction, my environment, the things I like to do. Meditation is a great tool to hear yourself.

What will it take to meditate?

What associations come to your mind when you hear the word “meditation”? Perhaps a Tibetan monk bending in incredible poses and trying to catch Zen? Such thoughts are far from the truth. In modern realities, everyone is able to meditate. It does not require special devices, but only a sofa cushion and the right attitude.

I recommend starting the day with meditation. I prefer to meditate in the lotus position and make sure to put a pillow underneath so that there is no strain on the spine and lower back. If you do not have a special cushion for meditation, you can twist a towel roll or put a sofa cushion. The main thing is to keep your lower back unloaded. Keep your back straight and turn the hip joint: the more it is turned, the more you relax.

I suggest starting meditation with five minutes a day. This is an optimal start to prevent mental overload. Choose a pleasant and non-annoying melody for your alarm clock – abruptly coming out of meditation can also have a negative effect on your mental state.

Put your palms on your knees, control the position of your back and close your eyes. All your attention should be on the tip of the nose – the place where air is collected and breathing begins. Concentrate on inhaling and exhaling.

Is it necessary to clear the mind during meditation?

At various trainings you can often hear phrases like “forget about everything”, “stop thinking”, “turn off your brain”. But what to do if even in moments of complete calmness you continue to be preoccupied with pressing problems? Is it normal or do you make a mistake willy-nilly?

Naturally, in the process of meditation a huge number of thoughts will arise in your head – this is normal. It is impossible to switch off your consciousness and remove everything from your head, especially as a European person who is constantly in active consciousness. If you get distracted, catch yourself doing it and go back to focusing on your breathing.

What are the benefits of meditation?

Meditation has long ceased to be considered solely a way of spiritual and religious knowledge. Now it is a chance to relieve stress and rest from exhausting workouts. This practice not only improves concentration and mental health, but also has a positive effect on your figure. In addition, meditation is a great way of self-awareness that helps your brain reboot.

For me meditation helps me to be less reactive, less irascible and aggressive, I become more aware. For me, mindfulness is the ability to choose my reaction, my environment, the things I like to do. Meditation is a great tool to hear myself.

Another important point is that discipline is needed here. If you want to see results, you need to repeat the exercise for at least three weeks. You can always find five minutes to yourself.
