What are the benefits of seaweed? How much of it can be eaten and to whom?

Seaweed is an excellent anti-aging agent. It is rich in antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. It is considered one of the best sources of iodine, strengthens the immune system and regulates blood sugar levels. Above all, it is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, dietary fiber, minerals (sodium, magnesium, iron and phosphorus), and vitamins A, B, C, D and E.

Today seaweed is available on store shelves in various forms and types: pickled, dried, canned, pressed and frozen. In markets it is sold by weight, and if you want to buy a product of the first freshness, it is better to take it, be sure to specify before buying the date of production and shelf life.

Why is iodine so valuable?

Iodine is an essential component for the thyroid gland. If there is a lack of it in the body, we feel weakness, immobility, the work of the heart, brain and kidneys deteriorates. Therefore, it is necessary to consume an average of 130 mcg of iodine per day. Seaweed is an excellent source of iodine – depending on the place and conditions of cultivation, 100 g can contain up to 400 mcg of iodine on average, so eating even a small portion of 50-60 g will cover your daily allowance.

For weight control

The fiber in seaweed eliminates the feeling of hunger for a long time, allows you not to overeat and feel comfortable for a long time. It also helps to fight excess weight and reduces fat deposits. Therefore, if you are on a diet, seaweed will work well for you.

For the heart

High cholesterol in the blood can lead to serious cardiovascular diseases. For its part, seaweed reduces the level of bad cholesterol, which has a positive effect on the heart and blood vessels. And the peptides in its composition normalize blood pressure.

How to choose seaweed?

First of all, pay attention to the place of its cultivation. The best is considered the White Sea or the Barents Sea. Of course, you need to check the expiration date of the product and the conditions of its storage. The package should not have dents, damage, leaks.

In stores, the best option is considered cabbage in plastic transparent containers. If you are confused by something when choosing – color, smell, type of brine – such a product should not be taken. At home, when opening the package, it is desirable to transfer it to a glass jar – so it will be better preserved.
