How to realize that cucumbers are bad and should not be bought?

Cucumbers, along with tomatoes, are probably the most popular vegetables in central Russia. In summer, they are used to make salads and to make pickles for the winter. Cucumbers can even be used to make lemonade or face masks. But in order for the vegetable to really benefit, you need to choose it correctly. We tell you what to pay attention to when buying and how to realize that the fruit has spoiled, even if it looks normal.

How useful are cucumbers

Cucumbers are rich in fiber, which improves intestinal function and nourishes beneficial bacteria. At the same time, the vegetable is 95% water, contains many useful minerals and vitamins: potassium, magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, iron, chlorine, iodine, vitamins A, B1, B2, C.

Potassium – an important element for the work of the body:

  • normalizes heart rhythm;
  • regulates the acid-base balance;
  • activates thinking and brain function;
  • lowers blood pressure.

How to choose good cucumbers

When shopping in the store, pay attention to the appearance and condition of the vegetable. If you notice at least one of the above signs, I recommend postponing the purchase.

  • Dark or light spots on the surface can be signs of the rotting process. In this case, mold bacteria have already penetrated deeply into the flesh of the fruit and infected it. Consumption of such a vegetable can lead to severe poisoning.
  • Cracks on the surface of the peel. In them, harmful microorganisms accumulate, which trigger the process of mold.
  • Shiny surface. The glossy shine of the cucumber is a sign of processing the fruit with wax to hide the defects of poor-quality transportation of the product and make it more attractive.
  • The smell of rot, bitterness and other unpleasant aromas. These signs signal the use of excessive amounts of fertilizer at the growing stage.
  • Softness in the stalk area and other parts of the fruit. This also indicates that the cucumber is beginning to spoil.
