A sport kreatívabbá tesz minket - derítették ki német tudósok. De hogyan működik ez?

Does exercise really affect brain activity? How does sport help to develop creativity?

We tell you together with a doctor.

In January, the journal Psychological Research published the results of scientific work by specialists from the University of Würzburg in Germany. According to the researchers, mobility has a positive effect on creativity.

Experimentally, scientists proved that the greatest creativity and originality in decisions were observed in people who according to the rules of the experiment had no restrictions in movement. But how can this be explained?

Creativity in sport can be defined as the ability to produce original ideas, tactics and moves, acting swiftly with the ability to adapt and be flexible in decision making.

Many human and animal studies show that the brain changes in response to physical activity. This is partly because exercise brings extra blood, oxygen, and nutrients to the brain.

Over time, scientists have concluded that mobility has a direct effect on brain activity. Movement promotes free creativity, liberates us, allows us to distract ourselves, facilitating the generation of new ideas. Physical activity stimulates brain function and sometimes even helps prevent mental disorders.

Which sport is preferable to exercise to be more creative?

Georgi: There should be novelty and atypicality in creativity. Flexibility helps you find different solutions for the same situation, and reaction speed helps you perform these actions with less delay.

Most sports tend to be conservative to one degree or another. They leave less and less room for creativity, which hinders the development of creative thinking. However, there are sports in which creativity comes to the forefront. In parkour, for example, the more creative a tracer thinks, the more original and spectacular his tricks are, the faster he overcomes obstacles.

As for less mobile sports, yoga is a great fit. It teaches a sense of control over your own body, relaxes, relieves stress, emotionally energizes, opening new opportunities for creativity. Even regular walking can stimulate brain function. A 2014 study from Stanford University found that we are 60% more creative when we walk.

We can’t forget about team sports either. It’s how we interact with more people with a common goal, learn teamwork and develop creativity.

When trying to come up with something original and unusual, you have to be active. You can not force yourself to sit in one place without movement – it only hardens the thought processes. You can walk around the room, roll a ball on the floor or even go for a walk and think in an informal setting. The main thing is not to limit yourself.
