Diet sodas may be more dangerous to your health than regular sodas?

Can diet sodas be more harmful than regular sodas?

Many people choose drinks labeled “sugar-free”, but in this case there are pitfalls.

Is diet soda really healthier than ordinary soda? What can it be dangerous?

Let’s find out together with a nutritiologist.

You have decided to lose weight, switched to a healthy diet, in the store you try to choose healthy products, vegetables, salads. And accidentally seeing “sugar-free soda”, you thought: “Well, it’s a diet drink, why not?”. But is it the right move? Although the sugar content in a glass of diet drink may be zero, it does not mean that it will not have a harmful effect on the body. Let’s take a closer look at this question.

Elena Doronkina

Nutritionist and founder of GetVegetable, a nutrition delivery service.

If you have chosen the path of healthy nutrition, exclude all carbonated drinks from the menu.

What is in the composition of diet sodas?

Elena: If you parse the composition listed on the label, it is usually acesulfame potassium, phenylalanine, orthophosphoric acid and aspartame. Most likely, all these names are unfamiliar to you, nevertheless there are no prohibited substances among them. But there is one question – are all the substances listed in the composition or is there something, for some reason not added to the label? The unanswered question.

Aspartame, a synthetic sweetener, is a rather suspicious component. This is where the nutritionist camp is split in two. Some believe that it is absolutely harmless, while others claim that there is still harm, but in case of excessive use (more than 50 mg per 1 kg of body). Presumably, if you weigh on average 65-70 kg, per day harmlessly you can drink 20-25 liters of diet soda. But calculating the exact amount of aspartame in a drink is quite difficult. And again, no one knows for sure what other components sodas contain and what consequences its use will bring.

By the way, the “bubbles” that we all love in sodas can also cause hunger. They contain carbon dioxide, provoking the release of gastric juice. As a consequence, this leads to an increased feeling of hunger.

Let’s get back to another component of diet cola – phenylalanine. It affects the brain, including reducing the level of the hormone of joy – serotonin, depleting its reserves. This substance can cause depressive states and attacks of aggression.
