“Meditation in motion” is how tai chi, a technique practiced by more than 150 million people around the world, is often described. Originating in ancient China, tai chi is one of the most effective exercises for mental and physical well-being, and the practice is useful for treating and preventing many health problems.

What is the specialty of tai chi

Tai chi is a set of exercises consisting of flowing movements and fighting stances. It is based on three criteria: dance grace, health gymnastics and combat technique – each component is in interaction and harmony with the others.

Tai chi differs from other types of similar physical activities for several reasons:

  • the movements are usually circular and never forced;
  • the muscles are relaxed rather than tense;
  • joints are not fully extended or flexed;
  • connective tissues are not stretched or traumatized.

Who is indicated Chinese gymnastics

Tai-chi exercises are allowed to everyone, regardless of age. In China, people often do gymnastics in the open air at dawn. In Russia and around the world there are thousands of special schools that teach you to synchronize breathing and perform soft movements that imitate various forms.

This practice is especially useful for the elderly, patients during rehabilitation after injuries, as well as those suffering from mental illness, diabetes, arthritis, etc. People with developmental disabilities or in wheelchairs can also successfully learn tai chi.

What are the advantages of this technique

The results of the effects of Chinese gymnastics on the body cannot be overemphasized. Regular exercise increases joint flexibility, activates parts of the brain, improves posture and coordination, normalizes the heart and intestines.

Studies show that Chinese Tai Chi exercises are extremely effective in the fight against osteoporosis. The positive effect is achieved through carefully designed slow movements. Constant training helps to strengthen muscle tissue, and also has a beneficial effect on the vestibular apparatus and reduces the risk of falls for osteoporosis patients.

Tai chi regulates the respiratory system, helping with respiratory diseases. Gymnastics also stimulates the stomach, which can alleviate gastrointestinal illnesses.

Gymnastics strengthens the central nervous system and reduces stress levels. When the movements are smooth, calm, accompanied by attention to breathing and awareness, it creates a flow of internal energy and promotes relaxation.

As a survey of tai chi practitioners and beginners shows, the exercises relieve tension, help with depression, fatigue, confusion and anxiety, and make you feel energized and in a good mood.

However, tai chi is not a substitute for medical care for serious medical conditions. If you have any, you should consult with your doctor and inform your instructor of any health problems or recent injuries.
