BC One 2018: McGregor’s loss, Ukraine’s flag on the stands and the final without ours

If an ideal world appeared somewhere in a parallel universe, the main ruling force in it would be dancers. People for whom “everything that happened in the dance circle stays in the dance circle”, all proceedings take place exclusively to DJ sets and funk rhythms. And to prove that you are cool, you don’t need years of litigation, international lawyers and thousands of doping samples, you just need 30 seconds, to go under the spotlight, you and your body.

Perhaps that’s why even the loss of “French Conor McGregor” – bboy Lil Kev and the flag of Ukraine, which appeared in the stands during the battle, worthy of less attention from the media than the atmosphere of friendship, fair competition and respect for the opponent and the hall, which reigned during the finals of the world championship in breakdancing Red Bull BC One 2018 in Zurich.

In our material we have collected for you 5 stories about the final, which will forever go down in the annals of the world dance community.

Story 1: Was it “ours”?

BC One Finals is a ticket to the Mecca of breakdancing, a grandiose goal and a big dream for all the boys and girls who put on daddy’s tights, over-size sweatshirts, sneakers and go out into the circle to jam, battle or freestyle – in other words, to show their own dance style, play sounds and solve the eternal argument about who is cooler. That is why it is not an easy task to enter the top 16 guys who have the opportunity to fight for the title. Unfortunately, this year participants from Russia could not make it to the finals and dropped out of the race at the qualifying stage.

Our girls were a little more lucky, they managed to break through to the top 16, but did not get into the coveted four, which was given the opportunity to go on stage during the final ceremony and decide the dance dispute for the title of the best bigirl of the world. Our country was represented at the competition by bigirl Kastet and bigirl Mess.

Story 2. Why did “McGregor” lose?

Biboy Lil Kev from France was dubbed “Conor McGregor from the world of breakdancing”. And it’s not even in the external resemblance, but in the ability of the dancer to make a show out of each of his output on the dance floor. Like to delay the beginning for a couple of minutes, because the audience is not loud enough to applaud, or deliberately “bully” the opponent with his dance tricks.

But, importantly, there are absolutely no questions about his style and presentation. In the world of dance, as well as in the world of big sports, in the head is often stored in the performances of not those who do everything right, and those who do it in their own way, bringing in the usual routine ligaments and complexes a little soul and his own vision. That’s why Lil Kev lost with dignity. He was knocked out by none other than the winner of BC One 2018. We’ll be looking forward to seeing his comeback in next year’s finals!

Story 3. How Ukrainian bboy taught us how to be friends and did it beautifully

Among dancers, as among ordinary people, there are two main types of athletes: those who go out on the dance floor with a “today is a matter of life and death” or “if I lose, I’ll die” face, and those who get high on everything they do and feel joy at the very opportunity to go out and show themselves. Ironically, it’s not always the former that wins.

I’ll tell you absolutely honestly that when I got to the stands, I immediately decided on my favorites for the finals. Naturally, I was rooting for the winner and, according to one old Slavic tradition (which doesn’t really exist), for someone from “ours”. But, since the Russians, Belarusians and Kazakhs did not make it to the final, the question resolved itself: with all my heart and soul that evening I was for the Ukrainian dancer Uzee Rock.

For me, Uzee Rock is a man of kindness, a man of atmosphere and a man of respect. He high and fly on stage, warmly hugged rivals before and after the battle, regardless of whether he himself went further or not. One of the few dancers who was seen off with applause and a slight sadness that he did not pass in the final battle. Uzee Rock – a dancer who proved that you should win and lose with dignity, because the most important thing is not the title, but the moment that you lived, the moment that gave you the dance.

Story 4. Unequal battle. Battle of the dance floor in Zurich: Japan vs France

For the first time, in the 16-year history of BC One battles, the title of the best of the best among girls was played in Zurich. In the final round, four athletes faced each other on stage. Interestingly, three of them represented Japan. In the final battle, Japan’s Ami faced France’s San Andrea.

Looking at the Japanese bigirls, there is only one question: how do they do it? Technical, petite gals who crank out intricate backspins and swipes and manage to hit the music. It’s moments like this that make you very happy that this spectacular and really challenging sport has finally made it into the Youth Olympic Games program.

Story 5. About why breakdancing is more than a sport

But breakdancing has always been, is and will always be more than just a sport. Today, breakdancing is a philosophy, a culture and even a lifestyle. This is the movement that helps hundreds of boys and girls to “pump” themselves, to learn that our resources and imagination is limitless, learn to feel your body and move through life in the rhythm of dance.

That’s why I look forward to the day when the break section will be mentioned in the network of youth Olympic broadcasts. And I sincerely hope that these competitions will bring only light, good and the most positive vibes for the audience.

In the meantime, we dance to the record, which is spinning DJ, and with pleasure turn over a new page in the history of world breakdance. And, of course, we believe that the day will come when our bboys will explode the final battle BC One and prove that a good dancer is not hindered by any circumstances.

See you in Mumbai for Red Bull BC One 2019!
