“Bieber had abs and I was drinking beer and sausages”. How Ed Sheeran lost 25 kg

Ed Sheeran, a Briton with Irish roots, is one of the most popular performers of the last decade. Last year he completed his world tour, during which he earned a record $ 775 million. He is known and loved all over the world. It would seem that the man has nothing to worry about at all.

However, Sheeran has long been plagued by problems with the way he looks. He even had to withstand a powerful wave of hate in social networks because he does not have abs, which are an indispensable attribute for modern stars of show business. As a result, Ed had to take action.

“I did not train and drank beer.”

Already being at the peak of popularity, having released a number of world hits, Ed received disapproving comments from subscribers, among whom were his friends. They jokingly called him “Teddy Two Portions” for the fact that he ate a lot and did little physical activity.

As a child, he loved to play soccer, but instead of the goal he constantly hit the windows of neighboring houses. At some point Sheeran so began to doubt himself that he even refused to star in his own videos. He didn’t want to look at himself in the mirror, let alone on the TV screen.

“I wasn’t insecure. But when people around you point out your flaws, your brain itself starts to fixate on them. My problem was going to the pub where I could eat mashed potato, pie, pudding, and drink beer and sausages. After that I didn’t train. I wasn’t in the first three or four videos. I was about the same age as the One Direction guys and Justin Bieber. They and Justin Bieber had abs and I was pondering if I should look the same.”

“Thought all my clothes had just shrunk in the wash.”

He first set out to lose weight back in 2016. A year before that, Sheeran announced he was going to take a career pause. He needed a vacation after a huge amount of concerts.

First he fulfilled his dream by working for a few months as a salesman in a charity store in his hometown, and then he went on a long-awaited trip. Ed traveled to a bunch of countries, went whitewater rafting, swam with sharks. This went on for almost a year. But despite such activities, the singer seriously put on weight.

“It got to the point where I couldn’t get anything on me but my gym pants. I thought that all my clothes just shrunk in the washing, but it was not so. It was worth taking a pause in my career, and I swelled up like a balloon.”

Something had to be done. Ed had to change his eating habits and give up fried food for a while. But, as Sheeran himself believes, the main reason was the refusal of beer. Then he managed to lose almost 20 kg, but after a few months the singer began to give himself one indulgence after another. And the problem came back again.

Cycling and smoking cessation

Last year Ed went on another world tour. Before it began, he weighed 100 kg, at the end – 75-76. How did he manage to lose 25 kg in an endless series of concerts? He had to go back to proper nutrition, although it was incredibly difficult to do it. Especially in the U.S., where every dinner Sheeran after the concert consisted of chicken wings, fries and beer.

In addition, he began to engage in regular physical activity, fell in love with cycling, and every morning began with a 45-minute jog in the fresh air and swimming in the pool. Ed enjoys the occasional workout at the gym, but he values the outdoors above all else. And he likes cycling first of all because it allows him to be alone with his thoughts and get away from the hustle and bustle.

When the world quarantine finally ends, Sheeran wants to go even further in his sporting endeavors and run an entire marathon.

I want to run it where the paparazzi or anyone else won’t find me. Maybe in Japan, China or one of the Nordic countries.
