What is digital apparel?

Digital fashion is gaining momentum: dresses from famous designers can be seen but cannot be worn.

Virtual sneakers or real ones – what to choose? To wear on yourself or on a virtual character – questions that are already arising in connection with the popularity of digital fashion. What is it good for and where can you buy virtual outfits?

Why is virtual clothing gaining popularity?

Digital clothing is becoming more popular every year. It all started with dressing up fictional characters in computer games and grew into a whole business – a new turn in the history of fashion. And the market for so-called “skins” in games that allow characters to change their appearance, according to analysts predicted by The Guardian, by the end of 2022 will reach £ 36 billion.

For example, the game Fortnite, which already has more than 250 million users, just involves the purchase of different “skins”. Today, digital outfits have started blowing up Instagram and have gone beyond gamification.

Which brands are releasing digital clothing?

In 2019, a digital Iridiscence dress by The Fabricant sold for £7,800. And it’s just one of many high-end outfits that can’t be seen in person. Clarings, a Norwegian company popular around the world, also launched a series of virtual clothes for a fixed price of €20. The entire line was sold out in less than a week.

How else can you try on a virtual outfit?

Those who are not yet ready to spend money on outfits that do not exist in reality, can try on clothes in a virtual store, without leaving home, and then buy them. Many services give the opportunity to see how you will look like this or that thing before buying. You will not have to spend time on a trip to the store, the queue in the fitting room, and then to the cashier. After all, it often happens that we wear a thing until the first photo in Instagram. And when we see ourselves from the outside, we are disappointed and hide the unsuccessful dress deeper in the closet.

Another option is the Drest app, where you can dress a specially created character in existing clothes from the collections of Gucci, Fendi, Prada and other brands, and then buy your favorite looks on Farfetch.

The advantage of digital clothing is not only that it doesn’t take up space and you don’t have to spend a lot of time looking for it. It helps the environment by reducing the fashion industry’s carbon footprint.

Where will virtual clothing be seen?

Daniel Grider, CEO of Tommy Hilfiger Global and PVH Europe, points out that digital clothes will become available for sale much faster because there will be no need to spend time sewing and photographing them. He believes that digital products are almost indistinguishable from those produced in the traditional way. Tommy Hilfiger plans to place digital clothing models in more than two thousand retail outlets alongside conventional clothing by the end of 2022.
