Any outdoor activity in nature is great because we start to breathe more actively, the supply of oxygen to the body improves.

How many calories does this or that hiking activity burn?

Hiking

During a normal walk without weights (without a heavy backpack), a person can burn about 250 calories. Walking is very useful – motor activity helps to improve the respiratory system.

Sergei: Unlike running – even if the technique of foot placement is not ideal – walking does not have such a shock load on the knees. Movement is necessary for the health of the legs to prevent stagnation in the blood flow of blood vessels, varicose veins and so on. On walking I can say that a person spends about 200-250 calories.

Excursion with climbing up the mountain

Excursion with a climb up the mountain involves much greater energy expenditure. Trekking with a backpack doubles the calorie expenditure up to 400 calories per hour. The load on the body is increased, more muscles are used – while walking mainly flexors work. And when climbing a mountain, the gluteal muscles are also involved – they get a load similar to training in the gym, when you do squats. But there is a certain danger when walking downhill in the mountains – in these conditions the load on the joints increases and you need to be very careful.

Scientists agree that horseback riding is a great substitute for going to the gym. They conducted an experiment and found out that horseback riding trains the heart and lungs well. They backed up their work with figures of energy expenditure during this activity. As with other sports, the exact number of calories you can burn while horseback riding depends on your weight, age, fitness level, and riding style.

Here are approximate figures:

  • Plain riding (30 minutes): 205 kcal
  • Riding in stride over rough terrain (45 minutes): 195 kcal
  • Galloping (10 minutes): 93 kcal
  • Trotting (10 minutes): 74 kcal
  • Riding in stride (10 minutes): 57 kcal

Sergei: If you don’t just sit on a horse, but try to control it, it is one of the most complex types of exercise for the whole body. You actively use the leg muscles, which are not involved in normal life – the inner thigh and shoulder girdle are working when you control the reins. Your back muscles are also engaged, because you have to include cushioning. Therefore, horseback riding is a very useful exercise.

If you have a lot of free time on vacation, do not be lazy to go somewhere on foot or on horseback. You will get a lot of impressions that will remain in your memory much longer than just resting in a 5-star hotel room.
